Wake is out having left their best starter unused. I'm a big proponent of playing to win the next game... not the game after the next game.

I think they played it correctly.

- He already pitched on a short week last week. Saving him for Thursday gives him a full week’s rest.

- You’re facing the worst team in the league who already pitched their ace the previous day.

- They’re already a lock for the tourney so a loss doesn’t hurt you. No chance at hosting unless you win the whole thing (even that might not be enough).

All that points to saving him for Thursday against the #1 seed. IMHO.

I don't think the 5 days of rest is a problem... but your points are all reasonable.

I started to post about this. I consider this every year when ACCT rolls around. How many coaches play this event with a significantly (emphasis on significantly) reduced urgency compared to the big tournament? I'm speaking of teams who are certain their status for the big tournament is set.

It takes some level of confidence to think you know your situation/selection next week is satisfactory. I tend to believe the benefits of winning in the tournament out weigh any negatives (mainly rest for arms).

FSU has now dropped back to #16 in RPI. If we win 2 ACC tournament games I foresee a possible 13 seed.

If I was coach (and checking my bank account I'm not) I would...

• Allow for swinging early and often the first game. Solid contact with anything in the zone but no chasing. Don't take pitches to just to read the pitcher. We seemed to do that against uGa and got like 10 pitchers so it didn't work out well. Likely to see the same pattern for the first game. Seemed a few other games we were taking too many pitches also and it threw off our rhythm. We could probably play small ball and win the first game due to their depleted pen, but our bats need to be hot for the entire tourney and the first game should set the pace.
• Use Patel when you need him. But if you can hold him for Saturday I think we only get beat in a close game where a play here or there could have gone either way.
• Do what you got to do to get to Sunday. At that point it is just sheer will to win the final game. You hope your bats stay hot and you have enough in the bullpen tank to eke out a win.

Seems so simple, but it's why my bank account balance will stay at non-coaching levels.

I think we are a solid starter and another good 3-4 inning closer away from making a solid run to Omaha. But it is more than I expected when the season began with a pitching coach in his second season here.

Hope McKee is on a pitch count of 50 or 60 to let him recover some. Hopefully we get a lot of runs; but if Cal gets 16 we'll probably lose. WarrenNolan predicts we'll win 7-4 but that doesn't take into account the recent pitching loads for both teams. With a 93 RPI, beating Cal neutral site wouldn't help our 20 RPI.

Finally, @DecaturJacket , a pitching parent told me that the rule of thumb for college pitchers is that they recover about 18 pitches a day. Make sense? I know it varies by individual and intensity of pitches. So if a pitcher usually has a limit of 50, then a day after pitching 36, he could pitch 32 (=50-36+18). Point being that a lot of Cal pitchers could come in for a limited number of pitches, but that screws them if they win. But win today is what matters for BOTH teams.

State is projected as a 2-seed in most places, so they still have a lot to play for. Clemson isn't quite the same team that beat us in Atlanta, but obviously still dangerous. I'll be interested in which Clemson shows for this one, but if we win I hope it's a barn burner.

Both teams not at their best. Clempy 6-4 last 10 (counting yesterday win & 5-5 before that). NC State 4-6.

If Burress is hitting and we are throwing strikes, I like our chances against anyone. That's what I have in the poll. Picked to win 2 since that's what I do and Burress hitting better than his average (Mr June I hope).

Tech will be massive favorite tomorrow, something like -350 (maybe more) given who were facing and how thin they are at pitching. Great outcome instead of facing Wakes horse.

Sold Vegas short a little… Tech is -425 to open vs Cal. Win today, set yourself up well for NCST or Clemson (without their ace Saturday), and give me a statement game on Sunday vs UNC.

Meanwhile Clemson / State will probably need to burn some arms and if Clemson wins they’ll have an extra day of wear and tear. And that will line up with our best starter right now.

And then if we win the SF we’ll be playing a team that’s played Fri/Sat while we’ll have played Thu/Sat and might have some arms back that they won’t.

Again Cal could come up and hang another 12 spot on us and we go packing by tonight. But hard to imagine a better set up for us.

Regardless of how Tate pitches (I'm very confident in him btw), it's hard to imagine our offense not being loud in this one. Cal's pitching is not good in general, but as-is they're going to struggle to have enough arms to finish this game and every arm they throw will either have less than 15 IP on the season or have already thrown in the last two days.

Needless to say, their staff (which finished 12th in the league) should be taxed.

Going back to this, Foley and de la Torre were really the only two guys that had any success against us in the regular season series.

Foley went 2 IP in relief over 2 games with 2 hits and 0 runs
de la Torre started the Sunday game and went 5.1, 6 hits, 3 runs (1 earned)

de la Torre threw 85 pitches yesterday, so safe to say we won't see him. Foley has thrown both days so far and is at 49 pitches. You also have to figure with relief pitchers that they're warming up each time which essentially adds pitches too. If we see him, he'll be far from fresh.

Guys we may see:
Tremain - went 2.2 IP in relief over 2 games against us, giving up 3 hits and 3 ER
Piper - did not pitch in the regular season series against us. Even though he's only made 1 start all season, it seems like this may be the logical starter
Hollis - also did not pitch in the regular season series against us. Has 2 starts on the year. Another possible starter, but only 13.2 IP on the season.
From there it's guys with even less than 13.2 on the season.

All logical but baseball is not for engineers. We are both saying anything can happen. But I have cold beer waiting. Or whiskey if things go sideways.

I seem to remember that the run rule is NOT in effect for tournament play. Does anyone know?
