ACC to Three Divisions?

According to new NCAA Football Oversight Committee chairman and Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, some in the ACC are considering expanding its current two-division lineup of the Atlantic and Coastal into three divisions. Bowlsby intimated that it’s the uncertainty over just what the ACC wants to do that’s somewhat bogged down the legislation moving forward, although, again, it’s expected to be in place in time for the 2016 season.

“I think there’s some belief that ACC would play three divisions, have two highest ranked play in postseason,” Bowlsby told Dodd. “Really, nobody cares how you determine your champion. It should be a conference-level decision.

“But because the ACC has persisted in saying, ‘We’re not sure what we’ll do,’ there’s probably a little bit of a shadow over it. In the end, I don’t think it’ll be able to hold it up. We’ll probably have it in place for ‘16.”

I don't like the idea of using rankings to determine who gets in the championship game. Since a lot of the rankings factor in historical success and name recognition, I can see us losing out to FSU, Clemson, Miami, and VT with equal records/resumes. I'd much rather have it based on some objective criteria, with rank a distant tie breaker. If they just want to guarantee the best two teams regardless of division, just get rid of divisions entirely and play an 8/9 game rotating schedule. I sure wouldn't mind swapping out a UVA/UNC/Duke for Syracuse/BC/Louisville every now and then.

Now that March Madness is over, expect more articles like this to fill in the time during the longest off-season of any sport. At least it keeps college football in the conversation no matter how idiotic the proposal from these empty suits in charge of the Power-Five Conferences.

This is dumb. Smells like a lame duck move by the conference to try improve its brand by manipulating outcomes and turning the conference champion into a beauty contest based on the polls. Just get rid of the conference championship game altogether if you are contemplating a three division league.

Hopefully this is just more mindless, offseason banter and amounts to nothing but fiery exchanges on message boards and snarky jokes about the ACC.

No, No, NO...

3 permanent partners and 5 rotating opponents... Simply, efficient and we would play everybody every 2 years...

Bobinski just said on Chuck and Chernoff that this was the first that he or any other ACC AD had ever heard of this idea and that it has never been discussed. As he said, there are currently 14 teams, and 3 doesn't go into 14 very well.

Maybe this is the plan for getting ND to join full time, and they're just laying the groundwork now. This lets ND know that we have a plan whenever they get sick of sitting on the fence and they don't have to try and get another school to join in with them.

I never turn on the radio but just happened to right as those clowns said MBob was coming on so I heard the interview. When it is available to stream I will try and post it as it was a good one to listen to. I liked what he had to say about CPJ's integrity in recruiting at the end of this last cycle. He said that as they had a great season and won the Orange Bowl, etc., that near the end CPJ was presented with opportunities to "cut" committed players in order to get "higher ranked" kids who suddenly wanted to commit to Tech.

I think Eric covered it in January-February by mentioning names of kids who at one time had Tech offers but had committed to other schools or took too long who now wanted back in. According to MBob some of that meant sticking with a less applauded recruit (plan b or what not) instead of cutting them when the plan A kid finally or suddenly decided they want in. His point was that CPJ simply refused to renege on his commitments and play that Tennessee type game. Always easier to have principles when it is convenient so it was nice to hear direct confirmation of CPJ's integrity.

this post is a function of one's age. for example, none of us OF really consider VT as a brand superior to GT. Even FSU and UM are somewhat of the "nouveau rich" in the world of college FB. GT, now that is a brand is reminiscent of Remington shotguns, Gillette razors, Filson hunting jackets and Ford trucks.

I'll give you that. Our historic success is so far removed from the "ESPN era", while those other schools built their names in the past 20-30 years. I was just talking about this with my brother over the weekend, he's a USC fan so it centered around our game with ND this coming season. He couldn't understand why the GT game was so high priced compared to what he's paid for SC games up there, completely ignorant of our history with them. Most casual fans really have no idea we were a national power back in the day. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Now you've done it. Don't forget Brylcreem, Lucky Strikes (LSMFT), Black Label Beer, and white socks.

Stupid.
I've maintained this split:
Uva is the odd man out since they wanted VT in
Old ACC vs Big East(+UVA)
Coastal:
GT
Clemson
FSU
4 NC schools
Atlantic:
VT
Miami
UVA
Pitt
Cuse
BC
Louisville

No cross division rivals. Rotating cross division.
It would be tougher for us than the current setup, but I would love to play Clemson and FSU every year.

Actually, it was the governor of Virginia who directed UVa to hold out for VT. I don't think UVA wanted VT in the ACC any more than we would want the nad-licking fleabags in the ACC.
Well they voted in the wrong governor!
Really, there will be an odd man p out. UVA seems like the easiest choice.

DC Bee would be very angry to lose the semi-annual football game in my backyard - Hooville. There would be serious trouble for everyone. Really looking forward to Halloween this year.

Coastal Atlantic
GT. FSU
Clemson. VT
Wake. Miami
NC St. Pitt
UNC. Syracuse
Duke. B.C.
UVA. Louisville

Fairly evenly balanced IMO.

The main issue is still ND and who will become #16? If ND + 1 comes in I'd move FSU to the coastal. The 2 new members would go to the Atlantic.

Here's another question. If ND does not come in as a full member...is there a need...or benefit...of adding 2 more schools to get to 16?
