ACC & Notre Dame Partnership

Threw them a lifeline? Maybe in their quest to stay independent but lets be honest, every conference would take ND right now no questions asked. They could join the Big 10 tomorrow if they wanted to. Nobody is saving them from anything. If we do kick them to the curb and they finally relent and join the Big 10 then we lose all games against them. Now we see huge yearly matchups with ND vs Ohio St, ND vs. Oregon, ND vs. Michigan, etc. It will be a big boost to that conference. So we won't be playing them anymore and the Big 10 will be adding marquee matchups that will probably pull in 6+ million viewers every game. How does that help us as a conference?
Those matchups are big because of the teams not named ND. ND-Maryland is about as exciting as ND-Wake Forest. Either way, this temper tantrum is the final straw for me. They can go to hell. Continuing the current lopsided partnership would show a lack of self esteem on our part.

ND/Pitt drew about 4 million viewers. ND/Arkansas had over 4 million viewers. Even ND/Stanford had 1.5 million viewers in a completely non competitive game played when half of the country had already gone to bed. ND certainly brings attention and viewership no matter who they are playing. There is no real debate on that.

The CFP likes to keep their backroom deals secret!
He has been talking to Stankey and who knows what deals they are making in private. He is acting like only ND players make sacrifices to play football. They obviously think they are better than everyone else and they don’t understand why everyone else can't see it. Obnoxious.

I personally enjoyed the Notre Dame fans saying by “why didn’t the ACC point out that FSU beat Bama, instead of - or even along with Miami beating ND?”

Because that would dilute the message, you self-aggrandizing idiots. The ACC doesn’t owe you anything in football. If you and another ACC team were on the margins of the men’s basketball tournament, you can damn well bet the ACC would lobby hard for Notre Dame. As it was, their goal was to show that Miami was more deserving to be in than some other margin teams. Full stop.

My favorite take on this whole situation was this comment:

The ACC should have done both! Getting Alabama and having ND in would be a better result for the ACC. The ACC plays ND about 5 games a year and rarely plays Alabama. The SEC does not need another cash advantage!

ESPN pulls the strings. The SEC was always getting 5 after last season. ESPN makes more money off the ACC than they do ND so they didn't want to to screw over the ACC. I'm mildly surprised it wasn't Duke and ND instead of Miami and JMU though.

Well, I predicted that I might regret my post. I was arguing for a nuance that can’t be heard right now for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is ND showing out and throwing a tantrum, something everyone not named ND is rightly ridiculing. The other problem is that, in spite of what Catholics project to the world, they are far from monolithic. Some cling to an older vision of Notre Dame as having a unique Catholic witness to the world, and others have probably been corrupted by financial privilege. But I was arguing that not everyone at ND wants to remain independent because of money, and I still believe that, in spite of the really poor way their being snubbed was handled by them.

And, for the last time, I hate being in the position of SOUNDING like I’m defending them because I’ve been critical of some aspects of the Catholic Church for at least the last 30 years.
Remember this was the AD spouting off, not the President of the University. The AD is a former TV exec and a huge ND football homer (played for Holtz).

I look for ND to try to run up the score, when possible, on ACC teams next year. Laying points when ND plays UNC, BC, Syracuse and Stanford (perhaps) might be a good investment.

Probably at the time Alabama was thought to be a shoo in. Who thought they were going to crap the bed against the pups.

I don't recall that ND's exit fee from the agreement had been mentioned, so I searched and got the following result. Note that it is AI generated, so a grain of salt might be beneficial:

Notre Dame's exit fee for leaving the ACC is currently set at $120 million. This fee is part of a sliding scale that decreases over the years, eventually reaching $75 million by the 2030-31 academic year.

To those calling for Phillips to "kick them out" - that is likely not the best course of action. Better to let them walk and get(or sue to get) the $120M...

I honestly hope ND implodes , like FSU , at this rate.

ND wants the benefits of being in the conference, but doesn't want to split money so they opt out of the conference for football . That's on them
Either join fully or leave.
It's not hard .
Don’t worry. In a few years a lot of teams will leave this joke of a conference. And no, the ACC will not kick them out for football because the ACC needs them more than they need us. You may hate them but they could make a 20 game schedule every season and their phone would still be ringing from AD’s wanting to schedule them.
