A change in approach to coaching staffs/programs verbiage?

Just a simple observation after listening to Coach P’s comments about Sims being our starter as QB. I remember a huge emphasis last year by CGC that we didn’t have depth charts or starters but only ATL and all those players who were “ATL” are expected to get playing time. Of course it’s almost impossible to faithfully promise multiple players within the same position group playing time if they are all deemed “ATL” resulting in reducing playing time/much less pull a premier player so the others get their reps in. It’s such a tricky balance between verbiage and implementation in the “real world”. However it’s an appealing marketing/recruiting technique to throw out there when talking to future recruits. Although the face value or tone of this post may seem bias/negative I am not really intending it to be that way I am genuinely curious. Are we shifting away from things like having a DJ on staff pumping music, weightlifting on the sidelines pregame, energy crew, money downs, Waffle House cups (I miss the WH Wednesdays interviews). I would like to hear more updates on the status of the OL from Brent Key. He was so vocal at the onset of his hiring. I really thought that he would be more visible/present in the media/interviews talking about the transition, coaching skills, and progress of where they’ve come from as we have moved away from the identity of TO offensive linemen. Plus I thought it would be great training for him to have practice/gain experience interacting with the media/press if he has HC ambitions. I am hoping for insightful comments and not critique of grammar or parsing of words. I am just looking to see what the opinions of others are as we move forward in this transition of development of a FB program under GCG.

The only thing that I've seen that's definitely different is that they have reigned in the pace of practice somewhat in order to pay better attention to details, and specifically this year, address all the penalties. From the start, they've talked about the ATL chart while also using "starter" or other words like that, so I don't think that's very different. The money down signs were present at the open practice a couple weeks ago with the Juice Crew yelling and waving them during the live scrimmage portions. So in short, no I think it's all pretty much the same besides the winning being "what's important now".

ATL more applies to defense and skill position. The coaches have repeatedly said in interviews that QB and OLine need cohesion and consistency. I agree with that view, a barrage of big bodies on defense can wear the opponent down.

As for all the other Collinsy stuff you mentioned it was all present at the spring practice. They literally have a Waffle House sideline. I think Waffle House Wednesday was only used for us to get to know all the position coaches when they were first hired. Luckily we have had very little turnover so there has been no need for Waffle House Wednesday.

I think you ask some very important questions. However, trying to be precise in exact wording is exhausting and doesn't matter. If we win, such verbal "slip ups" if you will will be forgiven. If not, every word will be scrutinized and examined in exhausting detail. In the new era, any disconnect between what the players hear and what they coaches say will be visible via the transfer portal. I would look for unusual player movement out in the future as an indicator of what the players think about your questions. they are the ones who will determine our success going forward.

I for one understand that coaches have different approaches and have never really listened to pressers anyway. I don't find them very useful. I trust what I see and not what I hear.

I came under football coaches where such stuff was looked on as a childish distraction from the job at hand. Consequently, the less, the better, imho.

But … this seems to be part of what you get with Collins. If he thinks he needs it to succeed, so be it. Oh, and all this ATL business was always BS. No coach goes into a game without a starting lineup and an idea of who's up next at every position.

The whole idea with ATL is to try to get the players to stay ready and not have to get ready. The idea is that you may not be the starter, or even next man up, but know you're going to get tapped at some point so stay ready and keyed in.

The hope is that as the team gets better, the floor to clear above the line moves up and we develop QUALITY depth at positions. The staff has said it is about getting to a level of trust that the staff believes you can and will contribute in game scenarios. It also helps with rooms that are bursting at the seams with talent (think the RB Room). JP, Donate and Jah are all supporting each other because they know week to week, the dude who gets it done will see his snap count increase. The starting snap is just one out of many, so they're more focused on workload volume not order.

That said, of course the coaches, staff and guys know who is Player 1, Player 2, etc. in any give position. We also like to run more flex schemes on D so will rotate based on what the O is doing, who practiced well, etc.

But the recruiter who is trying to coach has brought Tech Football down to the level B*** L****. I dont see any relief this year either. Fortunately BB is looking good. I will buy season tickets this year. I love the advantage CJP brings with his defense style and take care of the ball. But Tech FB. It is so sad! The fans who measure success by recruiting rankings instead of results are killing this program. I hate that the recruiter has killed me being a fan of Tech FB, along with a huge swath of existing fans and he has stopped new fans joining us. The damage the recruiter is doing spreads to all aspects of Tech FB and will take a looong time to repair.

Personally, I really struggle with the Money Down. I totally agree with the philosophy, getting off the field or moving the chains on those key downs is huge at the end of the game. 3rd downs are when the playmakers shine and you can't take those plays off. However, I really hate the execution with the paper money, the announcer, and the signs. Like if it was just an internal team thing where they hyped each other up for 3rd downs, great.

You do know that Pastner coached GT teams finished 11th, 13th, and 10th in his first 3 years. He also went 12-24 in year 2 and 3 in the ACC and 27-37 overall.

I find it interesting that you’re so fond of a coach who by all accounts was bad and on the hot seat early on while at the same time crapping on another coach who is off to a slow start.

Honestly the only thing is sad is fans who had unrealistic expectations and continue to bash the program because we aren’t running the TO anymore.

The game of football is won at the LOS and with QB play. Our already undersized OL was decimated by injuries in year 1 and we didn’t have a legit qb option. Our DL was severely undersized as well.

In year two our OL was healthy but still not the quality you need at this level and we started a true freshman at QB (with limited spring practice, no summer, and shortened fall camp) behind that OL.

Our DL was also beat up and again still undersized.

We should have the pieces to start making significant progress across the LOS (assuming we stay healthy) this year. We also return a QB for a full spring, summer and fall. If we still stink after this year, it’s fair to say some changes may need to be made.

But to call our coach “the recruiter” is childish at best. That “recruiter” has brought more talent, size, and speed to GT in his short time here than that (to use a childish analogy about our last coach) OL coach/offensive coordinator did in his whole time here.

First, there should have been an attention to detail from the start. CGC made a big deal of running the two huddles in practice and wondered aloud why others don't do it. (I looked at it as another of his gimmicks). Now, it doesn't appear we're doing it, in order to put more focus on details.
Actually, if there was ever time to do that, this would be the time to do it. And pay attention to detail. Look at the spring roster from 2019 to now. And with all the transfers he's brought in, they could probably benefit from that prior approach he had.

From what I’ve read they are still running 2 huddles. They have slowed it down some and are calling out mistakes like penalties. Things have calmed down some because they feel the level of energy they are looking for has been instilled in the team and with the change in body types and skills they feel it’s time to focus more on results.
