Well, if that one dept was pretty much responsible for keeping thousands of athletes in and eligible for a decade plus, isn't that an institution-wide issue?

UNC may indeed still be a really good school overall. However, it could be argued that if the chancellor (or w/e title) knew of obvious academic fraud, their accreditation could be called into question, no? Actual question, I don't know how that process works.

I don't know about pulling their accreditation (it would just hurt too many innocents who had nothing at all to do with this), but I don't see how the NCAA is able to claim this is somehow out of their authority. It's extremely clear this was done to keep athletes eligible (competitive advantage), give them an easy path so they could focus their time/energy on sports (competitive advantage), and bring in guys who may have been intimidated by the academic reputation (again, competitive advantage). But no, they're too busy busting us for Bay Bay getting some clothes from a buddy and then not sitting him for the UGA game even though he was innocent. In short, the NCAA is a joke!

IIUC the NCAA's big money maker is the NCAA tourney not college football. Not to mention all that licensed apparel. IOW they have a ve$ted interest in UNC continuing to be a bell cow.

I am not a UNC fan, but I live in NC and think we Georgia Tech fans need to rise above name calling and cliches when referring to other schools. The issues in the African and Afro-American Studies department at UNC are awful. I will not defend them. I am not even sure there is a case to be made for a department that specializes in Afro-American studies. That said, a student can get a UNC degree in French, a language that is spoken as the native tongue by only 1% of the world's population. It is not important that we GT people agree those degree programs are worthwhile. That is the business of the UNC administration.

I think we would love to see a 4* DL transfer in to GT and be a force in the the next few years. It is disappointing to find out he might get in at a school we have to play every year. It turns out, he was turned down at UNC as well. UNC remains a great school, in spite of what happened in the AFAM dept. The head of that department was fired. The assistant who facilitated so much of the fraud is also gone. So is the faculty representative that should have blown the whistle. So is the UNC Chancellor. So is the athletic director. The secretary in the AD's office is still there. Maybe UNC should fire her, too.

After the fraud at Syracuse, nobody in NC expects the NCAA punishment for UNC to be pleasant. And I doubt they will get the death penalty in any sport. It could be UNC will be a gimme ACC win for a few years, but they will still be there.

I know all of us want to win every game, but if UNC is crippled by sanctions and has 5-6 years of mediocre teams in football and basketball, will you be happier by winning those games than we have in past years? Beating an inferior opponent is not a source of pride.

That was well said and very persuasive. I think the animus directed toward UNC is bitterness over how the NCAA has treated Tech over the years and the way UNC seems to get little punishment for infractions that are monumentally worse than anything Tech has ever done. But I agree with your basic point. We can be typical fans and criticize our rivals till the cows come home but we need to remember that UNC is an excellent school, in spite of the tragic academic fraud perpetrated in one department. I especially hate that it casts a shadow on all Afro-Am departments which is unfair since some of them are producing excellent scholarship right now in other schools.

But for serious, on the field is a different thing from in life. That's an important point to grasp in the process of growing up.

I think we are in good shape now on DL. Maybe just overoptimistic. If this guy has two years left and has to sit out for one, I don't know he helps that much. Basically getting 50% efficiency (2 schollie years for one year playing) out of him. That should be a consideration too.

To me, stars don't matter. If you get hung up on stars you start to sound like DWAGS...we're above that. We always lose the Star Wars but everything tends to work itself out. I look at it as a matter of "Did CPJ get who he wanted?" Leave the stars to Ed McMahon!

I will need input from recent or present Tech students to close the loop, but my take is that EVERYONE would be aware if we, as students, never saw a jock in any of our classes. If all the athletes were sequestered in some obscure curriculum, never at the library or computer center, wouldn't it stick out like a sore thumb? When I was in school, admittedly eons ago, there were athle ifetes in almost all my classes, toiling as I was. I think it would be common knowledge if they were doing none of their own work, but showing up on Saturdays. The reality of the UNC situation makes it impossible for me to ever regard them as "a great school" ever again. When weighed against the Penn State situation, UNC deserves sanctions exponentially greater. Their sins were deliberate, calculated, and went on for years and years. I haven't heard one bit of evidence that suggests that it isn't still going on today. You can rationalize that it was "just one department", but that department interacted with almost every athletic squad and staff to keep players eligible. Football and basketball to tennis and volleyball. You will never convince me that the entire athletic endeavor wasn't (isn't) completely corrupt.

Totally agree. I was in Raleigh last week and a radio announcer said "we can't forget that many UNC athletes received great educations here", bbut that TOTALLY misses the point. That makes about as much sense as a hit man saying "apart from all the people I have murdered, I have haven't murdered anyone". Certainly many athletes received a good education, but the fact is that UNC broke the rules in such a way that I gave them an unfair advantage, along with giving many athletes a bogus education. The penalties should fit the crime.

UNC will probably get hammered by the NCAA. They deserve it. But, UNC has a lot of athletes who do NOT need the AFAM classes to maintain good grades and progress toward a degree. Certainly, some did. And those classes, and the sham grading system that made them popular with marginal students who were also athletes, will cost UNC dearly.
