It's amazing how much Dabo stock has fallen in recent years. He was basically seen as the near guaranteed next in line to follow Saban, and his name hasn't come up once in this thread.

Dabo’s name hasn’t come up in the thread but he is considered one of the leading contenders according to insiders.

These are the schools that could be looking for a new coach depending on how the interviews go:

Clemson
FSU
Ole Miss
Oregon

Alabama will not choose a high risk “up and comer.” They will go after a solid recognized name in the business.

As others have pointed out, Kirby Smart has a groovy thing going at uga. Hard to imagine him leaving for any other school.

Norvell and Dabo were considered top choices at one time. But things change. Oregon’s coach has SEC experience and football analysts say his offensive credentials alone make him a desirable replacement for Saban.

The inside track supposedly is Kiffin. There is no doubt he would jump at the chance. It is his dream job. I personally think he would be a bad choice for Bama. Whoever follows Saban will be on an instant hot seat and I am not sure Kiffin has the character traits to handle that kind of pressure without making it worse.

Will be fun to see what happens. Meanwhile Bama could hemorrhage a lot of players and recruits while waiting to hire the next coach.

Probably been thinking all year. I am too old to put up with this Sh__ that is NIL and these kids who are talented but feel/act more “entitled” which diminishes their athletic abilities which are largely unknown/unproven at the college level. And he decided to “cash out” and enjoy life.

But at the end of the day you can only promise so many players playing time. Or go so deep into position rotations that eventually and realistically either you don’t have the NIL incentives to offer or you can’t match the allure or PT/Starter roles to everyone.

I think he would have liked one more championship but realized that might be harder with NIL, and strong programs at uga and Michigan, and take longer than he wanted to stay coaching.

Now, as college football has moved more and more towards professional sports with the transfer portal and NIL etc, Saban decided he’s seen enough and decides to hang it up. It has become too much like the NFL. He apparently cited those as being the issues that caused him to pull the trigger.

No criticism of Saban at all. But those who have pushed college football in this direction are now starting to see some of the consequences. Hope they like what they get….

That’s a romantic notion that I would also love to see but those who are pushing college football even further toward this abyss won’t pause for Saban. Instead, he’ll be a grouchy old coach too set in his ways to adapt to the progress college football is making. Hell… We’re already talking about Dabo in those terms because of his refusal to use the portal.

Best case; he goes away quietly as one of the best ever. Don’t hope for any global shake up. Nothing is stopping (or slowing) this train.

Saban in the NFL found out how hard it is to win when you don’t have a major talent advantage. Also dealing with a Salary Cap is not something he has worried about in College.

Being a consistent winning coach in the NFL is much harder than in college. Basically 2/3rds of your schedule is against teams with equal or better talent. At Alabama he basically had 1 or 2 games a season against teams with equal talent.

Saban is on the short list of best college football coaches ever. He will be very difficult to replace.

Also, there are the Mike Norvell rumors. FSU has been getting Alabama transfers lately. It would be something for players to transfer from Bama to FSU, only to see their new coach transfer to the school they came from.
