I’m not sure why you think I don’t understand a scheme because I disagree with you. There were several good articles on Woody’s defense last year that went over his time at AppState. The turnaround for him was finding a strong and athletic NT to anchor his defense. He didn’t get that player until year 3. I think the need for that special NT means that it’s not just any recruit that can make Woody’s defense sing. And I don’t think we had that NT yet. The comment about masking deficiencies with unpredictable blitzing could be applied to any aggressive blitzing defense, and there are a lot of them. Collins’ defense is noted for unpredictable blitzing. Aside from Louisville, it’s hard to find a game from last year where we had a schematic advantage on defense. We did execute well against UVA, but I think that was mainly gutting the game out Regarding being loaded, we did not have many all-ACC players last year. I’m encouraged by our strength and conditioning this off season, and I like our DB and LB coaching this year. I don’t know what the problem was last year, but any of the film rooms on defense last year showed a lot of misreads, hips turned the wrong way, and hesitation. There’s a lot of room for improvement, but some smart people think that with good technique coaching we can get a lot better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
