Can't begin to say how much of a cheat code it feels like to have Carnegie coming off the bench. Her press conference yesterday blew me out of the water (I hadn't talked to her yet in a media context, and she too me/Rod/Chad's questions with ease). Easily one of the most well spoken freshman on campus right now. In the 3+ years I've covered GTWBB games, yesterday was the first time an AJC representative was there. Finally hit the big time.

The Lady Yellow Jackets hit the big time long before Dani Carnegie’s interview yesterday in front of an AJC reporter. They are 13-0, one of only 8 undefeated teams and the only one in the ACC and are nationally ranked. Only Kayla Bleackshear is a senior & 6’3” Atlanta grown MacKayla Taylor has committed to fill that space. They will get better yet this year and next year could easily top this one with everyone back again. And guess what? Neither AJC nor any journalist or pseudo-insider-journalist had anything to do with it. They certainly do not need any of the aforementioned to legitimize them. They’ve legitimized themselves through dedication, hardwork & teamwork.

Dani Carnegie is a bright young student, who when interviewed after committing and asked why Georgia Tech, she responded, “… because of academics & family atmosphere” as her first &’second priorities. We knew she was a smart young lady based on her choice of school and watching her play. Why on earth would anyone be suddenly surprised that she is well-spoken?

For me, comparing the Lady Jackets success to a video game and Dani to a cheat code that delegitimizes a win is demeaning. Journalists and insiders think way too much of themselves. The game is about the players, their sports & fans. We could actually do without many of the journalists and insiders constantly embarrassing themselves with big egos & little or no contributions. Not unsurprisimgly, Dani Carnegie answered press conference questions 100% better than anyone who asked them. Could use more female journalists covering sports. Betcha would never read a female sports writer posting about Dani Carnegie yesterday without mentioning the freshman’s 20 points, 4 treys and 8 rebounds, only about her answering the questions she put to her well.

Now what I don’t get is why our sputtering men’s team is so well attended compared to our generationally successful women’s team…

I don’t mean this to imply that the men’s team shouldn’t be receiving support, but instead to wonder why there isn’t a bigger showing for the women. While the fans that did show up were awesome, and I had a great time banging on the stands, the gap in attendance seems pretty ridiculous when you consider that this is an all time best start that continues to get better and better.

The men’s team is far from “well attended”. McCamish was empty the first two games I attended (Cincy & UMBC). And Saturday’s Duke game had way too many empty seats and high percentage filled by Duke alum & fans. At least the Lady Jackets seem to be keeping most opposition fans away, except for traveling player families. Season should not become a competition between Ldy Jackets v men in attendance. Real fans support their teams win or lose.

That’s fair, I’m probably getting misled by TV angles. Either way I’ll be in the stands. Attendance should hopefully pick up for both once winter break is over.

I’m glad you had a good time. Our students need to collectively figure out at some point that basketball games are not too dissimilar from football games. You can tailgate, party, yell cathartically, and release stress. You get the opportunity to do it 30-40 times a year versus 6 or 7 for football too. And the weather is usually better inside McCamish than Bobby Dodd.

I think I mentioned when we met welcoming the football team home from Dublin that I split my time in Atlanta. I go to some women’s games for a very successful program that sells out every game and the environments there are intoxicating. It’s the place to be every Sunday. The difference there (and my home state of Connecticut) is that they have tons of sidewalk fans and are the only shows in town.

It starts with the students though. You guys are the reason the games are fun for everyone else. Key gets that, Damon definitely doesn’t, and Nell I’m not sure about. Attendance uptick for football has been in lock step with increased student enthusiasm.

Not sure if it’s possible but it’d be great for the women to play a game or 2 in O’Keefe.

The Scheller College of Business at GT offers a certificate in marketing and the campus is full of computer science geniuses to interact with students. You would think some administrator would be tasked with configuring plans to market & promote student and alumni attendance without that chore falling on the coaches who can’t be expected to have any knowledge in those areas. They’ve got more than enough on their plates preparing & developing the product to come up with anything more than free doughnuts.

Keep the experts in their respective lanes & make use of the ones you’ve got. I have attended St John’s basketball games at MSG & USB. The giant scoreboard screen above center court is always alive with $ appeals & other promotions. Coach & players are enlisted to record promotions. Saw nothing of the kind at McCamish. The stands are usually packed with red shirts.for Petino’s squad. Very intimidating to visitors. Petino didn’t design any of those promotions but his program is the beneficiary. Any attempt at anything like this at Tech?

Very well spoken lady and represents the Institute so well. I am blessed to watch her play in white and gold. And whole team is so fun to watch. They are well-spoken, have a high basketball IQ, hustle, and have fun. Just watch them dance to the horse!
