Georgia Tech vs Yale

After a thrilling victory in Georgia Tech’s ACC home opener against Miami, the Jackets are set to face the Yale Bulldogs out of the Ivy League at McCamish Pavilion Saturday night. If you were excited for the Nerd Bowl vs Northwestern, I think we have raised the bar! Yale is 7-8 overall this year with key losses to Creighton, Wisconsin, and TCU but are coming off a win over Kennesaw State, 89-74.

Coaching the real Bulldogs (roll tide!) in his 19th season is James Jones. He was the Ivy League Coach of the Year back-to-back in ’15 and ’16 and is the winningest coach in school history. In 2016 Yale made it to the NCAA Tournament but sadly lost to Duke in the second round 64-71. With only two seniors on the roster, Yale is depending on some young but talented players to get the job done while continuing to develop.

The main youngster for Yale is the 6’7” sophomore out of Porter Ranch, California #24, Miye Oyi. Coming into this match-up Oyi is averaging 17.2 points per game and is shooting 35% from behind the arc. He has no problem putting shots up and is either on fire or less accurate than Jacob Eason trying to find the open receiver. Against Albany he was 2 for 10 from three and has gone 1 for 6 multiple times, but then goes 4 for 7 against TCU. If Tech can make him shoot tough shots early, it could cause him to not find his rhythm at all or ideally when it’s too late.

Another young talent for the Bulldogs is the 6’10” freshman out of West Palm Beach #20, Paul Atkinson. Most of the shots he takes are high IQ plays (big shock, right?) and his field goal percentage reflects that at 71.3%. Atkinson is coming off a 20-point game against Kennesaw State but like most freshman, he sometimes disappears and has long scoring droughts. Defensively, he plays longer than he is and has a nice wingspan that gives him the ability to affect shots or even block them. This leaves me questioning why he only has 4.7 rebounds per game. He has the tools to make it happen on the glass, so for him it is about continuing to learn the game on the collegiate level and putting a whole game together…hopefully right after Ben Lammers drops a 30 piece on him.

One of the few upperclassmen for Coach Jones is 6’7” junior #32, Blake Reynolds. He was second on the team last year in made three pointers but is only shooting 29% this year while averaging 11.3 points per game. Like Oyi, he is really hit or miss. Against Bryant University he was 4 for 5 from three but turned around next game against TCU and went 0 for 8 on three pointers and 0 for 10 from the field. Don’t get me wrong though, he can still shoot the ball, especially from the free throw line. He has only missed three free throws this entire year and should really try to get there more often. Georgia Tech just has to put pressure on him right off that bat and force bad shot attempts. If his shots fall, give credit, and then clamp down next possession.

Prediction: Georgia Tech should control this game from the start but that remains to be seen. I expect Jose Alvarado to build off of the best 7 turnover game I have ever seen and play well again. Yale does not have anyone in the back court that can control Jose or Jackson. This is another game where Tadric and Okogie should get in the lane whenever they want, and if Atkinson goes up to block the shot, drop it off to Gueye or Lammers for the dunk (grab the ball with two hands AD!). Based on patterns from the past we will play down to the competition and let them hang in all game…I say, nah, time to put a whole game together. Tech by 12.

Whether ND will guard Lammers on the perimeter the way Yale did will be interesting to see. I could see them making Lammers make a couple of 18 footers before they worry about him.
Frankly, everyone in the ACC would be wise to do this until Lammers proves that he is the Lammers from last year. To me, he looks....like he's not. I cringe when he shoots those 18 footers. I would love to know his % on this, but I would guess it is no more than 25% this year.

That's fair. He's certainly nowhere near 100% from what he showed last year. I think he needs to keep playing his game until he gets there, but I see how doing so could hurt us in the short term.

I was reacting to the fact they have lost their two best players off their roster this year to injury. Otherwise, I am in violent agreement with you.

That was ND who beat cuse without their 2 best players.

I don’t know what it is, and maybe I’m seeing something that’s not there but the chemistry with this team looks off most of the time. Like tonight when JO basically blew CJP off when he was trying to talk to him. I can’t quite put my finger on it but it seems like it takes this group a while for them to get enthused to be in the game.

I missed that. Can you go into more detail about The JO CJP interaction please?

The real reason we won is buried in this story. Link

Of all the things to ***** about Teddy, that one is number 234 on the list. He and 900 other officials will choose not to listen to players - or listen to them - at their own discretion and no one cares. The only thing you can really ding him for is staying there with his back turned instead of simply turning his back and walking away. No difference other than the picture folks can talk about.

I am glad he wasn't there for Yale as he is a known anti-homer. And God only knows what he would do when in a generally pissed off mood, On the other side he is actually one I would like to see when we play AT Cameron.

We are a "difficult" team at home.On the road,we need to get better to be a real threat given how there are NO pushovers this yr..I wouldn't doubt if we didn't win one away conf game.

I was there and did not notice it. I recall CJP lighting into JO at one point (after JO got an offensive rebound and then was clued for traveling trying to put up a shot, iirc). CJP really hollered at him. But you know what? JO played lights out the next few minutes. SWMBO told me maybe CJP should yell at guys more often....<shrugs>

I saw the JO-CJP interaction. i really don't think it was a big deal.

I don't have a problem with Lammers at 18 ft. He is more comfortable there then inside and allowing him to be out there makes it easier for AD To play inside. Also, Lammers simply needs to have time to shake off the rust. He's only been practicing for about a week now since the injury.

Corners are the most dangerous area for the 1-3-1, though last year's team was much better than this one about communicating and moving more quickly toward the corner when an opponent went there. Rotations have been slower this year- something that should not be surprising for a team playing alot of new guys and not having consistent rotations due to the injuries.

This year's team has a better offensive efficiency rating than last year so far (even with no JO for 9 games and an unhealthy Lammers), but its defensive efficiency is off a fair bit, more than offsetting that.

It's clear that the chemistry is not there with this team compared to last year, but that shouldn't be surprising given how the season has gone with the injuries, suspensions, etc. it's quite difficult to build chemistry when guys don't get to practice with each other much.

ALL ACC road games are fraught with peril, but assuming we don’t suffer significant injuries or other situations I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t win a couple of them.

Corner threes have been open a lot, however, I see progress in the last two games for perimeter D. More of these open looks have been in transition, or deeper in the shot clock. For Yale, it often took a 4th or 5th pass or more to finally crack the d for a good look. Some of the losses, the perimeter breakdowns were more constant. Also, a real uptick in forcing very late shots or clock violations against Yale, that is a positive.

In short, players are getting healthier, further away from suspensions, and more practice and game experience together. And showing improvement as a result. Also, the scoring and rebounding balance against Yale was a nice sign, while a bit odd as it didn't include Jackson.

Seem to be a dangerous home team again this year (in conference), and that pleases me to see. We can build out from there in the next few seasons.

Not sure Valentine in as much an anti-homer as a completely horrible official who likes to make himself the biggest part of every game. I believe the worst game I ever saw him officiate was our double OT loss @ugag in 2004 when CPH was still our coach.

+1 on that. 14 years later and I still remember Jonas Hayes mauling Luke every other play with no calls. Bye Felecia!

No argument about the UGA game. I almost lost a TV that game.

Teddy is still one of the guys you want to see when you play at Cameron. Enough of an AHole to match up AHole to AHole with K
