“Ignore” function is a super power

Maybe another user posts too many stats and you’re just over it. Maybe they’re always talking about bourbon. Maybe they write in all caps.

Maybe they are a Pollyanna, and can’t see the challenges we face. Maybe they’re always sour, and you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

Your experience on this board—or any other with a “block”, “mute”, or “ignore” feature—will be happier if you use the button or link.

If you see a post, and you just don’t need that post in your life, click on the user avatar and click “ignore”

Let’s just say @BuzzThePlumber keeps telling me where to get beer and the right color gold hoodies, and I have too many hoodies of just the right Pantone code. Just hit “ignore”, and my day is better.

Plus, the site is better for everyone else, because you don’t see me complain about the Buffalo Trace vs Woodford Reserve debates.

If someone posting on a message board gets anyone mad enough to cut off communication is weak. You can ignore by not reading or a novel idea accept not everyone is the same as you or me.Closing ones self off from differing ideas is called foolish and that is a sad way to live.

It's more often about mien than perspectives.

Curious, is there a way to hide/ignore entire threads?

I know most will eventually lose interest and drift onto the next page after a few days or weeks, but if we wanted to be proactive about it, could we?

Yeah, I don’t I understand purposely not looking at all angles especially regarding something that is a pleasurable past time. Every poster is valid and every thought is viable. But, I also understand a lot of people just want affirmation so I get it. I like being challenged. That’s why my favorite poster is Forensic. We disagree on a few little topics even though in the big scheme we agree on 95% of everything related to GT. That’s what makes message boards fun.

You have to ignore the poster. Not the best system, as there are posters I enjoy reading the opinions of but just not interested in some of the threads they post.

I have quite a few posters on ignore for various reasons. I still read most of their posts once I see the little button to show ignored posts at the bottom of a page, but having all their posts initially flagged as ignored is a nice reminder that they probably post stupid stuff regularly and you can't fix stupid, so best to probably not bother engaging.

While your viewpoints are both valid, there are other reasons to place a poster on ignore. This excerpt from the site rules provides a few: "Any member who is intentionally obnoxious, abusive, disruptive, repetitive, spammy, or "trolling" implied or not may be sent a warning..."

I have chosen to ignore a small handful of posters whose posts often fit one or more of these criteria, particularly the last one. Interestingly, and not coincidently, most of them have been banned from this site.

Most of the highlighted words are subjective. To let anyone typing on a key board genuinely make someone that upset says more about the offended than the offender. Sticks and stones brother.

Sometimes putting someone on "ignore" is the high road. Much better than getting into an internet argument with a troll or to be triggered by something. It makes my time on this site much more enjoyable, especially since I try to read all the posts and don't just pick and choose. If I find myself selectively skipping a font's posts, that tells me it's time to just put them out of my sphere.

I rarely if ever get offended by what someone types here or elsewhere on the internet. What bothers me however is people who find a talking point and just straight drive it into the ground with repetition. In every thread. After a post is made twice it's time to move on and think new thoughts. IMO. I have never put anyone on ignore but if I ever do it will be for this sin alone.

For an experiment I am going to put myself on ignore to see if this post will show up. Or there could be some sort of software glitch where by I ignore myself and thus it cancels out the people who have me on ignore can now see my posts. I will report back. If you have me on ignore and can't see this post as well as my report back then know the system is working as intended. If you don't have me on ignore and can see this post but can't see the report back then we have a software bug. I don't get paid anymore as a full time staff guy but I do some free lance systems consulting for @John and @CuseJacket.
