Our 1990 schedule sucked, and Colorado isn't exactly a traditional power.
TCU got in the playoff as-is. And they got smacked in the title game.
If you're trying to tell me a 3-loss Clemson or FSU team from last year could have gotten hot for 3 weeks and won a playoff title, I'd believe you...
Stoudamire is a name for his playing days. He has an unremarkable coaching track record.
Key was the only person we could afford that was willing to take the job.
We're broke. There isn't a "name" coach with experience walking through that door any time soon. We couldn't afford friggin' Taggert, and he's like 60 years old and didn't have any other options.
The rumor for the Pac 10 deal was Apple doing $20M/year + escalators from subscription numbers. Bad enough to where anyone with a choice is leaving.
The ACC would probably get (roughly) the Big 12 deal if we had to go to the table right now. It would not be anywhere close to the B1G/SEC deals.
I think the Saudi PIF will try to setup something in college football. The NFL owners won't let them in anytime soon, but college won't be as unified. We will not be in that league.
FWIW, people running the old BCS formula have gotten the same 4 teams as the playoff committee every year. If your goal is to figure out the best team in a given year, the 4 team playoff is probably where it needs to stop. But the goal is to make money for ESPN, so it will keep expanding.
In-person:
2008 white-out vs Miami where we boatraced them for 472 yards on the ground
2009 VT
2009 ACCCG
TV:
2004 Clemson (first game in undergrad, CJ)
2014 Orange Bowl
08/14/16 @UGA
lol, there is no "moral high ground" in college sports. The whole enterprise is utterly rotten from the foundation to the rafters. Just root for the team or don't, but don't pretend we're any better than anyone else. We just suck at cheating.
Last one of those we got was Gibbs, and he left to Bama for a free Charger and some NIL money. We're broke and no one cares about us, it ain't 1960 anymore.
In a few years the B1G is going to be sending something like 6x the TV money (25m vs 150m) to schools compared to the ACC.
It's a no-brainer if you get the offer, but I don't think we ever had one. The next move is probably a super-league where the big names leave the dead-weight like...
I knew we were broke, but I didn't think we were "hire the interim because we can't pay enough to hire anyone else" broke. It won't be any worse than Collins, but we have to fix our financial situation so the next guy can be a real hire.
1) The word "stay" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the OP's title. Besides a couple freak occurrences, GT hasn't been competitive consistently on a national or regional basis since the 1950s.
2) The eventual endpoint is a Super League with 24-40 teams. 32+ would give ESPN enough games to fill...
