When I ran track, we had several guys who practiced every day and never got into a meet. I admired their spirit and they were friends. I think the same can be said of about half a dozen of our pitchers. They go to practice and hang out in the club house, but never contribute in a sizable way.
Too bad they don't give the incentive of better field location to early arrival students like they did in my days, the mid '60s. I never sat in a worse seat than the 45 yard line as a student.

Looking at this list of teams that I consider blown games, it is stunning. How can we be that bad? Answer: aside from a few, our pitchers are not Div 1 talent.
How in the world could Bailey, Bart and Murray totally tank in the tourney? We had the highest batting average for the season and did not perform in the tourney.
Maybe you can sod two acres for $30K, but I would not want you to redo our baseball field for $30K. The type of turf is a whole lot different, and the degree of precision in laying the sod is a lot more exact.
Sometimes the downward trend is not the Coach's fault. There are other factors like (1) the ACC is much tougher than it was ten years ago and (2) GT is the most unforgiving school in the conference when academics are concerned.
