Taste dictates I ignore any kool-aid reference.
  2. Duke Preparation

He was offered the job during one of those hiring processes, I forget which. But he said he talked to his wife, they were happy at Duke, and were staying. And so did. I don't like the guy, but to find a coach happy and productive where he is? unusual.
  3. Duke Preparation

    Army needs to pass more.
  4. The day after

The Promised Land is California. (My authority for geographic certitude is Chuck Berry.) As for UGA's QB, I suspect Venables at Clemson was hoping to draw Georgia in the playoffs. His crash at the QB defense would run him right out of the stadium. Not as a senior maybe, but as a freshman he...
  5. Passing game

Actually, we don't. We have to show them we can. No DC is going to let a WR run free to the goal line because "they'll never complete it." If you are seeking druthers, then I'm all in. But we ain't gotta. VT, I think, is the exception that proves the rule. I am waiting for somebody to ask...

Lots of Calvin Johnsons out there, Mama is what, a school superintendent? Get 'em by the boatload.

    On which pass?
  8. How good are we?

There's something to be said about being as good as your record. It is kind of the law I guess. But I saw Miami dismantle ND -- ok, ok, ND was once again overrated, overhyped, over glorified by ESPN if you will -- and our game and it makes one wonder. It is historical that every Saturday they...

I don't know if it is unique to this board or not, but we sure see some of it, and I don't think it is exaggerating it. A very weird view of things.
  10. Virginia Tech postgame discussion

I just this afternoon became a vegetarian. Only way to avoid eating crow. I really, really liked the way they hung in there and played their way back when VT was pushing. A great way to win a game.
  11. Passing game

The parking is rotten, traffic is awful, the stadium is too historic, and all those long plays just boring. I think you are being facetious. But on this board one never knows.

Hmm. CPJ once ran ta very successful run and shoot out of Hawaii as OC. So I am guessing he a) knows how to install one and b) knows how to coach one. Just guessing. His 4-receiver set is an outshoot of the run and shoot.Today's verticals were run and shoot. He is a running football coach. Point...

    Kinda pumped, are you?

I don't take exception to any of that, save one part. But as for the rest: Alabama has always, as I can remember, done exactly that. If I remember reading about this somewhere, it is one of the reasons Dodd felt he had to leave the SEC: August had become a tryout camp for dozens of players when...

O'Leary has long since moved on, right? Is the object of the post to show that the lower the academic requirements, the easier it is to win? Now, that is a revelation. If one wants to graduate all Phi Beta Kappas off the football team -- assuming that would be possible -- then good. A laudable...
  16. thanks cpj and the rest of you who make this happen`

Lee Corso once got fired a Indiana after about 10 years and admitted his problem was that he could not recruit enough "hard-nosed smart guys." Great credit to Johnson and I hope he is at Tech a long time. But if he can't win he can be producing Einsteins and still get fired. His job description...
  17. VT week media

Actually I always thought Quinlan a house dealer. but that is a very good question. Johnson's reaction, to me, proves it. Sometimes it ain't the answer, but the attitude that tells.
  18. Virginia Tech Prediction Thread

I wish I felt better about it because i almost desperately want the right Tech to win. I think we need one and this would be a big one. But Bud Foster always plays Johnson's offense tough -- only Venables schemes it better -- and Marshall does not, in my mind, have a good grasp on the options...
  19. BjS- am I wrong. He has never played .. Can u say player

Smelter was big time. 4th and 15 at Virginia Tech and they connect. Kismet. Even after Smelter's knee injury I thought he would be a pro player but not much is happening with him. He's one of those guys with puzzling top end speed. He doesn't seem to run that fast except nobody catches him.
  20. BjS- am I wrong. He has never played .. Can u say player

I admit to being surprised, but I just didn't like him as a passer at all. Where Thomas had it over all of them was crunch time. Something in that kid rose to big occasions.
