Adding to your comment, if Demond Smith has locked up the nickel spot, then who would be the 6th DB in? Assuming it would be Noble, Milton or Durham?
I know it's too early to be discussing this, but what else is there to talk about???
Less prepared than a true freshman? I think MJ will be a good one, but I really hope his time doesn't come early. Ideally, he'd be a redshirt Junior (2017) before he gets heavy PT. That coincides with the year after JT leaves. Maybe get him some PT the year before that to get him ready to start...
This is BC's 4th year in the program. He doesn't have much more time to master his position. What we need is Roberts to come back and Griffin to step up big this year. Not trying to hate on BC, but IMO if we rely on him this year as a starter, our offensive production will suffer.
I had Lynn at starting CB opposite DJ White. Safety seems to have a few more bodies than CB, and it sounds like some people could be moving from S to CB (Golden, Noble?). Having more depth at CB is especially important when you consider that the nickelback will be in the starting package.
That is actually fairly surprising that he has made it to second string already. So that means the depth chart looks something like this (correct me if I'm wrong):
I. Johnson - RS-SR
J. Golden - RS-JR
D. Smith - RS-JR
C. Griffin - RS-FR
D. Noble - RS-JR (moving to CB?)
J. Marvin - RS-FR
J...
That seems odd considering we need people to step on the DL more than anywhere else. With 3 starters gone, there is a lot of playing time to be had. If Commissiong is as good as advertised, he should be seeing some good PT over the next couple years.
QB: Even
Last year we started a Redshirt Sophomore. This year will be the same. It feels the hype meter for JT is similar to Vad a year ago. He won't light the world on fire, but I expect him to be effective.
BB: Even
Laskey should be fine (5.8 yds/att last year), and anything Custis can provide...
Prior to the incoming Freshman...
Tackle
Chase Roberts (RT)
Chris Griffin (LT)
Bryan Chamberlain
Guard
Shaq Mason (RG)
Trey Braun (LG)
Shamire DeVine
Nick Brigham
Errin Joe
Center
Thomas O'Reilly
Freddie Burden
As others have mentioned, we seem thin on the outside. Moving Braun to Tackle...
Any reason why we wouldn't need him? Are we comfortable where we are with DB's? Or is it more because we are trying to fill up the last couple ships at other positions? I guess since we have ~5 DB's coming in this class, we're probably set. Plus Johnson and Golden are coming back off injury.
If I were him, I would be happy with just getting drafted. He'll have his chance to prove his worth as a CB in training camp. Once teams look past his size, they'll realize he has a nose for the ball, and belongs in the league.
