USC has one win over New Mexico State. They didn't play Rhode Island.
Since you brought them up, Rhode Island's best win is Seton Hall on a neutral court. URI's best road win (using kenpom) is #142 VCU. I think they are over-seeded.
They stopped looking at the last 10 games about 5 years ago. The logic is that the early games count also.

USC was #40 in kenpom. St. Mary's was the highest not included in the field at #28. (Others left out in the top 40: Penn St, ND, Louisville, Baylor).
USC's problem is that it didn't beat any top teams. 0-7 vs. the kenpom top 50.
Alston fouled out in 28 minutes and Gueye fouls out in one half if he has to guard the perimeter. He had no good options. Next up are walk ons. If they could play at all they would have seen some time this year.

I think you are off by a year on the 20 ACC games. The last I saw that starts in the 2020 season.
