A free (re: unblocked) defender has to make a tackle. As a DC, your scheme goal has to be to have one more man than they have blockers on any run play. That's about all you can do - you've put them in a position to succeed, and then the best man wins.
Not as much time as it looks. Our safety is slow playing it and if the qb had begun his throwing motion, he's down hill with a chance at a pick 6 (think Jamal Golden vs Clemson). Actually a wise non throw by the qb, followed by an unwise fumble
On close examination, it's definitely not a read, it's a designed qb run with a token fake to influence flow of defense. You know, one of those gimmick plays.
Lots to like on this one. I particularly like the disguised looks both in the front 7 and back 4. It wasn't obvious who was coming and what coverage we would employ after the snap. As Ibee pointed out the coverage was what foiled Kentucky's plans.
Yep that's as easy as it gets.
Just from these few clips, Nebraska D reminds me a lot of our own. I don't mean that as negative toward us, just that if Nebraska is doing the same thing we're doing, maybe there's a better reason for our defensive system than what's in my mind.
Man, those Austins are physical football players. Small but quick and pack a punch. They play much bigger than they are, reminding me a bit of Jemea. I'm gonna miss them when they're gone. Hopefully the young hotshots will alleviate my nostalgia for them.
I think he was playing his fit, the outside run force defender. It's the DE responsibility to spill the play to him, but he got killed. The DE there only needs to get low and make a pile to spill it outside. He could've even cut that pulling guard to cause the pile up.
I'm hoping for a big year for Simmons. I'm telling you, we are poised for a big year from the DE position - a very important position to a defense (maybe the most important). A pass rush makes all the difference.
Wind? Hind tit? The life out of the party? ... all kinds of decent options in my mind. When I say it, I never think of it as what I think some in this thread suggest that it definitively refers to.
Exactly.
So, what happens if Mitchell does break down? Jay still outruns him (or most any other LB'er, including NFL'ers) laterally and escapes the pocket. Probably his best chance was to do what he did and sell out full-speed to try to get him when he was most vulnerable.
Not sure I understand the point/distinction you're trying to make here. I don't see how "want to try Jay to see if he can take over" contradicts the rest of what you said. You say CPJ "will put the players on the field that will help the team win games" and "allow them all to compete for their...
Jordan is also doing well to quick-pitch here, and it's probably what he's been coached. He has no chance because of the DE, but it's not a bad assumption to think that the OLB is probably also taking QB responsibility so the pitch has a chance to succeed. The other thing you might see a QB do...
