A free (re: unblocked) defender has to make a tackle. As a DC, your scheme goal has to be to have one more man than they have blockers on any run play. That's about all you can do - you've put them in a position to succeed, and then the best man wins.

Lots to like on this one. I particularly like the disguised looks both in the front 7 and back 4. It wasn't obvious who was coming and what coverage we would employ after the snap. As Ibee pointed out the coverage was what foiled Kentucky's plans.

Yep that's as easy as it gets. Just from these few clips, Nebraska D reminds me a lot of our own. I don't mean that as negative toward us, just that if Nebraska is doing the same thing we're doing, maybe there's a better reason for our defensive system than what's in my mind.

I think he was playing his fit, the outside run force defender. It's the DE responsibility to spill the play to him, but he got killed. The DE there only needs to get low and make a pile to spill it outside. He could've even cut that pulling guard to cause the pile up.

I'm hoping for a big year for Simmons. I'm telling you, we are poised for a big year from the DE position - a very important position to a defense (maybe the most important). A pass rush makes all the difference.

FIFY I'd rather be in Nickel or Dime or Dollar on 3rd and long anyway. In that case we won't be relying very much on LB-coverage.

Exactly. So, what happens if Mitchell does break down? Jay still outruns him (or most any other LB'er, including NFL'ers) laterally and escapes the pocket. Probably his best chance was to do what he did and sell out full-speed to try to get him when he was most vulnerable.
