Thoughts from today
Howard and Saba are not ready for high end true 5 competition yet. Bacot did pretty much whatever he wanted to and caused the rest of our D to break down. I do think that Pastner has too quick a hook on Saba though. We need his length and he needs to play through a few...
I have no argument that Devoe had a monster game. He did a lot better against an NBA body than I ever expected. Full credit. It did seem that when we ran the return to Devoe Howard went off to the side and gave Devoe his left hand to work
Devion got multiple open shots from 12 feet that he...
I would love to see this. I wasn’t happy with what I saw with the set having Devoe and Devion working around Howard with Coleman and Usher sitting in the corner waiting for the pass. Deebo in particular didn’t seem to know what to do to get involved and didn’t have much impact. My issues...
From what I saw they called fouls on Howard when he turned his back on the defender to hand off the ball I don’t claim to know the rule but that seemed to be the issue. If it is simply all picks must be done face on then that is a fixable issue. If that isn’t the rule then the refs ****ed up
Devoe is demonstrably better than last year. He is much more explosive and can use it to his advantage.
Howard should dunk more but if he could make a 15 footer it would open things up dramatically. Hard to run Princeton with no threat from the foul line. May have to go back to the Banks...
Indiana ran their big on the baseline and he did rim "runs" from the short corner. For whatever reason SYR would send the big to the foul line and have the ball lobbed over their head to an NBA level athlete who was grabbing it above the square. They ran that high low all second half. Not...
You would have enjoyed the last 5 minutes. Duke had been up 15 earlier but a combination of their freshman panicking on the offensive end and throwing up gradu plus the OSU version of Dramond Green making the Duke bigs look silly let OSU catch em at the end. I think K let it happen to some...
Was interesting to watch SYR in Atlantis as they really didn't worry about defending the nail. The guards extended and only collapsed on the nail after the pass was made and with minimal defensive focus on the ball at the nail. Against Indiana they switched at least in the first half and...
FWIW I am not making any statement on next year - just pushing back that CJP’s development program is “universally” successful. He has been good but not absolute on the other side I would agree you only need a couple of success stories per year
As for next year The pieces are in place with...
I would be careful with the broad absolute statements like that. The staff has some major league successful stories in Moses and Jose - and several nice development stories behind them. Howard and Saba look good so far but still early against middling competition. On the other side CJP has...
Ouch - the infamous no contact practice. Never a good sign
CJP made a joke about subbing 5 for 5 but I expect he is going to have to adjust his Ironman substitution pattern to give even Devoe and Usher a couple of blows. I can only hope our opponents have had some exposure to the flu to even...
As a corollary to Fatmike, we don’t play the zone well enough to defend the three yet and we have been torched at times by the three when we tried to play the zone
We tried to play zone against CS and they beat us. On the other side I still think we will play a lot of zone in the ACC to hide...
With flu running through the team, just take the win and run. Type of game that we would have found a way to lose first part of last year. There were stretches of low energy - especially on the defensive end that could have been fatal but weren't. Write that off to flu and likely some of the...
Usher has potential to be the second fiddle - more likely third - but for him to really step up we need to get him in transition where he can really use his strengths and athleticism. If we plod in the half court like we did in the second half it will be tough for him.
