That sounds cool as hell.Currently on a blues tour. Met Jimmy “Duck” Holmes in Beltonia MS. Going to a club tonight in Indianola. Last night I was in Jackson MS for Morgan Freeman’s Blues Experience.
So cool that I misnamed Bentonia. That sounds cool as hell.
On my list. Almost too much to see around Clarksdale. Friend of my mine claims that “Crossroads” occurred on her family’s plantation. Jimmy Holmes gave me a different location as told to him by his mother.Make sure you swing by Clarkesdale. Get to Red’s, Ground Zero (saw Morgan F in there onetime), and Hopson’s. The Bluesberry Cafe for their weekend brunch is also recommended. Hope you report back!!
This was 7 years ago, but daaaaaaaang….
Next up. Here is another guy that didn;t get the credit he deserved. It's a Leonard Cohen song but he wrote many great ones of his own.
I don't know that any casual music fan would have ever heard of Cohen had he not written the song "Hallejah". I think that put him on a lot of people's radar. Another guy that I have come to appreciate more over the years who is a bit similar to Cohen in some ways is Tom Waites. I always liked his songs but had to acquire a taste for his "singing" if you will.Speaking of people that were underappreciated, Cohen himself. I did not know who he was until one of the seasons of True Detective came out and had me thinking "what is this music?". It was so perfect for that show and led me down a Cohen rabbit hole almost immediately. He passed shortly after.
Another name i know thanks to an HBO show. He was the intro to a season of "The Wire"I don't know that any casual music fan would have ever heard of Cohen had he not written the song "Hallejah". Wow...Mother's Finest!! There is a name I haven't heard in a minute. Fantastic band, never understood why there weren't a household name like most of the others you mention. That’s a great list. Just wondering… as a younger guy, have you ever listened to 70’s bands like the Eagles, Chicago, Doobie Bros, Allman Bros, Skynyrd, Outlaws, Mother’s Finest, .38 Special, Moody Blues, Kansas, Journey, REO Speedwagon, et al?
They were way ahead of their time but are still playing! Great band! Heard them at ACEB around ‘75 or so. Baby Love about brought the place down.Wow...Mother's Finest!! I was a Cohen fan from the moment his first album came out. To this day I find Suzanne one of the most haunting songs ever written.I don't know that any casual music fan would have ever heard of Cohen had he not written the song "Hallejah". Trivia triggered. Grand Funk was on the way to obscurity in Detroit until they played a concert in Atlanta which put them on the map.Wow...Mother's Finest!!
