Lammers is not a typical low post center. More of a Stretch 5. Most of his points down low were off rebounds or players penetrating and dishing to him ... he did not have the post up moves that others like Jacobs and Mitchell had a couple years ago ... Dirk fadeaway not withstanding. Lammers is also a very good passer (sees court very well for big man). The move that really got this team going was moving AD to the 5 - keeping him close to the basket where you have to guard him (and a couple times he has 'gone off' and gotten double figures). Early in the season when he was playing the '4' on the wing - teams were totally sagging off him - which clogs up the middle for everyone ... and offense stagnates. Back then I said CJP needed to address this - find some way to make teams play every player honestly. AD is a very good defensive player and rebounder, but at the 4 was such an offensive liability on the perimeter it pulled others down ... and small ball (or Cole/Wright) was the only answer if you wanted Ben at the 5 most of the game. Since playing AD at the 5 and Lammers at the 4 (when both out there), the combined output from both is higher than it was before - small sample size yes, but things 'flow' better to my naked eye most of the time.... and they do have to play Lammers honestly out there. Ben will not score as much, but AD will score more ... and the others will score more (less clog in the lane against man defense). AD still plays the 4 defensivel as he is quicker laterally than Ben. Going forward what do I expect to see: When AD is having a good game, or matchup dictates we need more size - we'll see a lot of AD. If AD is having an off night - or matchup does not hurt us with small ball - we'll see a lot less of AD (Ben in the 5 spot). Haywood will get more minutes as he gets back into flow - mostly taking minutes away from Alston, but some from AD. If Cole or Wright show more in practice - they'll get some minutes, but not a lot barring foul trouble or injury ... I think both can still be very good players, but are just not ready to play at this level consistently yet. I really think CJP is playing it by feel which way to go most of the night - fouls, matchup, who is having a good (or bad) night will divide the minutes between AD, Haywood, Alston, and to a lesser degree Jackson. Jose, Josh, and Ben will play close to 40 minutes most nights if game is close.
