Toughness... I expect to hear it often.

I don't know much about King, but a QB who shakes off a broken collarbone as no big deal and stays in the game another play is pretty much the definition of a tough QB.
Which is why I am not concerned about the loss of Jeff Sims. But wait and see how many media articles will make losing him a big deal for us, especially since he has been named starter at Nebraska.

It's pretty obvious now, at least to me, why the FSU coach decommitted Jeff Sims, he was not really big time CFB QB material, he had legs but was not really a passer, could throw the long ball and have WRs run under them but was not good at the other throws it appears. expect husker fans will come to realize that by season end.

Sims has everything to be a great passer (as well as a runner). He just rarely put together more than a couple drives' worth of focused effort within a game. And he rarely made the detailed plays (running out of bounds short on 3rd down, etc) when we needed them.

FYI Norvell didn’t really take time to get to know Sims. Jeff wasn’t the QB he wanted and he wanted the scholarships for other players. The minute he got to FSU he recruited a bit different style of QB than Jeff. I think what Jeff probably was lacking for Norvell was the quick decision making as a passer that Jeff had not really needed to make in HS.

Jeff went through a lot here and I think to some extent he handled his end of it quite poorly so I don’t blame folks for being down on him. And similarly while he is physically a gifted athlete and physically tougher than I think he gets credit for he could not stay healthy and he could not get to a point with our coaches (who I think most will agree were not the best teachers until Weinke got here) where he learned to make quicker decisions on getting rid of the ball to the right place on time. All of that to say I don’t think we will miss him and if he has success at Nebraska I will be happy for him but he was not going to have success here. Too much water under the bridge and he and GT needed to go separate ways for both sides to move forward. I am quite happy with our QB room right now.

Refusing to go into a game when you’re declared healthy to play is simply not ok and is about as selfish as it gets. Not a good trait to have in a leader. I know some will say he should be selfish and all that, but bottom line is he abandoned his team when they needed him. I never really wanted to see him take a snap for us after that, and I’m guessing there are some players on our team that felt the same way (though I admittedly have no evidence to support that statement)

He wasn't going anywhere that didn't guarantee he would start.

Let’s wait and see how it pans out but I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t the starter by the end of the season. Due to injury or being passed by.

He'll be ok for the cornholes, but he tanked his NFL prospects with that refusal move. It may be unrecoverable for him. Only saving grace is the NFL teams draft capability & if he sells the GT culture being as bad as it was he'll get a pass.

Not sure the media will be able to do that without egg on their face if our offense is what I think it will be, I'm expecting us to see an offense that is very effective in the pass and run game. May take mid season for people to begin to see that while we get it ironed out and running right.

I wish I could find the quote, but I know in one press conference Key expounded on his definition of 'toughness'. That it wasn't about physical toughness or fighting through pain (though, that's a part). It's about mental commitment to doing the right things especially when they're hard- excelling in class; being on time to practice, training, meetings, classes, meals; setting an example; playing hard every play no matter what; keeping focus and discipline when you're tired or discouraged, not drawing dumb penalties.

Which is why I believe Key will get us back to a good place. I have a belief that good football teams at any level do some basic things- protect the football, stick to assignments, play to the whistle, execute on special teams, push through adversity. Do those things and you'll win a lot of games. Some days the other team is just better. But plenty of times the other team will beat themselves, 0
.if you let them. If you never beat yourself, you start tipping that scale and creating your own 'luck'.

As Key put it: “It doesn’t change the toughness, the discipline, the commitment, the execution. Those are the four most critical things when it comes to building a successful football team.”

Toughness and intangibles are highly valued trait even coaches at the highest levels want in their QB. There's a phrase that I truly believe in and I think it applies to football as well: Do not ask of others what you're not willing to do yourself. The QB as a leader can not ask his RB/WR/OL/TE to put his body in the way of a blitzing defender if the QB himself isn't willing to stick his helmet into a pile of defenders to get that extra yard for a first down. The QB can't ask a WR to sprint 50 yards down field knowing that the play design means that WR is chess piece to move a Safety to clear space for his teammate to make a play...if that same QB isn't willing to run down field and throw blocks for his teammates.

I tend not to be so judgmental when, firstly, I wasn't there on the sidelines in any of the conversations and secondly I don't know everything that had gone down between the coaches and the players and it's really not that important to me to try and figure out who was right and who was wrong. Maybe judgmental isn't the right word but I didn't get much sleep last night, got up early today, and my wife was doing some summer cleaning so my napping spot was unavailable and my brain isn't working in tip top form :ROFLMAO::sleep:. Anyway, Jeff's no longer a Yellow Jacket and I wish him well and that's about the end of it for me. You can feel however you want and that's completely valid so I'm not trying to convince you to change how you feel or that you're wrong for not wanting to see him play another down for us so please don't take it that way. I suspect you're probably right that there are some players who were ready for a change. Since I didn't have to play with him I don't really have strong emotions towards him one way or the other. The strong emotions are ones I reserve for the guys who are in the GT uniforms.

Yep, mental toughness is the key for QBs.Every team (but especially a struggling team like GT) is going to have a CONSTANT run of tough situations in games on Off. If the QB can't handle most of those to the best of his ability , he is not ANY help in winning..
