Worrying about liability and lawsuits has nothing to do with science or anti-science. Liability has nothing to do with whether you think there will be any real harm or not. It has to do with protecting yourself legally and financially from potential liability. Will your house insurance pay if you start a campfire on top of your living room carpet and it burns down your house? They would likely dispute the claim and declare that your gross negligence caused the loss. If you run a gun range and allow people to go downrange and place/remove targets because you don't want to pay to fix the motors on the target cables you will probably be sued if someone is injured placing a target. They can argue that every other gun range in the state takes more precautions than you. In this case, it would be a harmed party arguing that every other conference took precautions that X conference deemed unnecessary. Also, look at it from a cost/benefit viewpoint. What is the maximum benefit from playing in the fall? A reduced season which only makes some percentage of the revenue. If the Big 10 and/or PAC 12 pull out, there won't even be an opportunity for a real championship. I would say with the reduced schedule and no inter-conference games that a four team playoff is even less authentic. What is the maximum cost of playing in the fall? If the Big 10 and/or PAC 12 pull out, liability goes through the roof. There is even a possibility that all sense of a student-athlete could be gone and that intercollegiate sports could come to an end.
