This actually happened to me for the first time in my career because of the pandemic. The company I worked for had about 85% of their income based on commercial aviation, so you can imagine what this meant when the pandemic started. We went from "can't produce enough and running 24/7/365" to not needing any material and shutting down lines that for 9 years were never shut down. 40% of the workforce was let go in April/May of 2020, and then when the 3rd quarter results came in way below the expectations, another cut was made in early November. That is the one that got me. Realize, that I had won 3 management awards for projects I led while at this company, was personally responsible for improvement after improvement, was the main customer contact onsite, was the SME for our MRP system, etc, etc. I think my age (59) and the fact that I took Covid seriously did me in, but who knows? Most of the management team at my plant had acted as if covid was a hoax, and they did not even follow the corporate guidelines related to C-19 (still doing meetings face to face in rooms for extended periods of time with no masking, for example), but I was cautious, due to my age, and I think ultimately, that played a part in the surprise decision. With that said, when I was told I was being laid off without cause, I was also escorted to my car. It is pretty standard policy for a lot of companies.
