Exactly! You summarized it in writing much better than I could have written it. It’s the principal reason why I opined in my earlier comments that Patenaude’s offense appeared to me to be more of a “smorgasbord” of offensive plays which we saw over the past season, rather than a “system” such as what we had observed in the past during the Ralph Friedgen and Paul Johnson years. Upon further reflection, during the past season I believe Patenaude may have been “in search of a system” centering around the three different quarterbacks he tried as starters, from Lucas Johnson to Tobias Oliver to James Graham. And for each of these starters he attempted to design different sets of offensive plays based on what he perceived to be the three quarterbacks’ respective strengths and weaknesses. This season-long experimentation—through the trials and errors of starting three different quarterbacks—was, indeed, made much more difficult because of the problems that were encountered with the offensive linemen along the way (injuries, inconsistency, position changes, etc.). Hopefully all of these problems can be ironed out and a much better offensive “system” can be installed in the next year—or two or three. (It’s more likely to happen by the third year, I think.) It’s going to be very interesting to watch because Patenaude now has five quarterbacks on the squad to choose from: Graham, Johnson, Yates, Sims, and Gleason. So I expect the experimentation—i.e., the “smorgasbord”—to continue.
