Good friends with the family of a D1 college coach. Was told yesterday that they would limit the portal to Spring only. After Spring training which would be moved up by all teams. Possible even eliminated (spring practice). This in the face of all the bowl team defections.

Take it for what it’s worth, but it is what it is. Scoffers (I know a guy) welcome.

I've heard similar things. The idea is it would align with the end of the spring semester so guys would enter their new schools in the fall.

That would be a great solution to start making bowl games relevant again. This year was the first year in a long time I wasn't glued to the TV watching bowl mania go down. Now, I turn one on and see 3rd and 4th string players going against each other.

What stops a player from just finishing the Fall semester at there current school and enrolling in another for Spring and bypassing the portal all together?

In the world of NIL are scholarships really necessary for some of the players. Let's take Singleton as an example, if he actually is getting $1million to go to AU what is $10k to pay his own tuition for the Spring and be a "walk-on" to the football team?

If there is no portal in December maybe a kid can't get a scholarship for Spring but there isn't any rule they can't get an NIL deal to pay their tuition for a semester.

Nothing. It basically goes back to how you use to transfer.

Scholarships just need to go away in general. You pay tuition from NIL. Keep scholarships for non revenue sports.

I also thought about this the other day. Hear me out. I know there’s enough money as it is being thrown around, but what if these bowls offered incentives to not only play in the game, but to win the game. Kinda like a bonus. I dunno where the money would come from (TV?) but they could find it. Hypothetically, if each team got 1 mil to distribute to to their team to participate, then there was another 1 million to the winning team to distribute.

Honestly not a big fan of this. If players want to leave then let them leave. They want to spend the Spring and Spring practice at their new school. Forcing them to stick around for another semester and participate in spring practice with a team that they full plan on leaving is a waste of everyone's time. Bowl games outside of the playoff really aren't that important.

Based on recent case outcomes, this will be defeated in court in about 5 minutes.

Except as mentioned above, there is no restriction on a player leaving a school on their own and registering in another school. The portal and signings really only reflect what counts against scholarship limits. If courts invalidate scholarship limits, this completely blows up collegiate sports.

Basically, the solution the NFL came up with for guys to show up for the Pro Bowl and win. It would definitely mean more for college players than NFL millionaires.

Eligibility. Have to go through the NCAA clearinghouse. That vehicle is the transfer portal. I see a lawsuit coming. Goodbye NCAA clearinghouse.

Pretty sure the portal is there to allow other teams to talk to a player without it being tampering. But it’s also the NCAA’s way of maintaining eligibility of the players. Even walk-ons go through the portal.

Love this, but there needs to be more.
Players should be limited to one transfer, then after that they should sit a year or something. Too many players portal hoping every year.
Players should also be required to finish the season, and not opt out unless a true injury

Just want to see things getting back to commitments to the school that's giving you a scholarship over yourself until the season is over. Especially if you getting NIL money

In the NFL you can't really just decide to opt out of doing your job
