I couldn’t stand Musberger because he used all the wrong terms. He’d call a formation a “Power I” because it sounded good to him, not because the offense actually lined up in one. Maybe the replay will be better, but the studio direction on the game was pretty bad if you were trying to figure out what was going on. Herzlich could probably see a lot more of the game from his camera angles than I could from mine. An advantage of being at the game is that you can watch the parts you want to focus on. Cotter has a great play by play voice, but he doesn’t tell you anything more than what you see on the screen. John Madden with the telestrator fell out of fashion, but I love to see a good color commentator break down a play and tell you a reason that one team is succeeding that you hadn’t seen. For having a handful of DL players, those guys played all out, and I would have liked to hear a lot more about that. I also would have appreciated hearing what was going on with the NCST defensive line penetration and how someone was getting beat (swim move or missed assignment or whatever). I forgot about that, and I remember complaints that “you’d never know he’s a Tech grad the way he treats us”. That may also be because he didn’t think much of Gailey back then. I thought he called an even-handed, but boring game, and I think both commentators were hoping we’d tie the game so they’d have something to talk about. They didn’t have good filler stories for the third quarter.
