What if Dodd had thought of optioning D players? No, of course, he must have; it's an obvious next step. My guess is that he wouldn't have liked to take the chance of screwing up the read and thought there were too many opportunities for error on pitches. Better to get the same result by deception and making sure that everybody gets blocked. Dodd was a believer in minimizing chances for turnovers, an absolute necessity in an era dominated by Ds.

Lovett used to run a Blue Hen T while my son was there, so I got to watch this offense (or something very close to it) live. If you had a QB who knew what he was doing - Lovett did in two of those years - it was like watching an intricate machine approach the D, then tear it to pieces surgically.
