He enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology and joined <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_Theta_Pi" target="_blank">Beta Theta Pi</a> fraternity, but left after his third year to enter the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Army_Air_Corps" target="_blank">U.S. Army Air Corps</a> Aviation Cadet Program on July 12, 1941.</p></blockquote><p></p>
