Those were not intended to be saying the same thing. I responded to @RamblinRed ... by saying that I thought Pastner's preseason optimism for "the 2 years following that" came from his optimism regarding recruiting. @bwelbo made his post about Pastner's optimism on recruiting in response to what I said and not as referring to the interview mentioned by Red. He was apparently remembering something posted by Kelly. I had a vague recollection of this AJC article which as it turns out was simply focused on his recruiting optimism and not prospects for the team. That was followed by a more cautious article after Watson decided against us. In the first of those articles:
“What the hard thing is, there are some high-level guys we’re involved with, they may wait until October, late October, early November (to decide), and are you willing to risk losing somebody else waiting for them, where they can really move your needle,” Pastner said. “That comes to me as a head coach. Do I take a guy if he’s ready to pull the trigger in mid-September, or do I tell him ‘Forget it’ and then wait for the player, but he could tell me ‘No,’ and then you’re waiting till spring.”
Now, I had inferred Pastner's optimism from his decision to apparently tell guys, "Forget it," because we waited and whiffed on a good list of priority targets. As it turns out, Red's AJC interview where Pastner was "quite positive" apparently about the program was really a quote in a Ramblinwreck article where he was positive about how well Jose and Michael will be in the backcourt together.
