@Longestday, thanks really good. I'll have to go back and look at some of the videos I missed. You do good stuff and help a lot. (We need someone to do the same for defense, but that would be like signing up for an optional colonoscopy.)

The article was sad. We do homecoming and tailgating a whole lot better. Having the stadium right in the middle of campus and tailgate spots everywhere makes it much more a community and less a corporate feel. This article made me appreciate what we have even more.

What is depressing is that Pitt may have lost the will to fight and not try against Fluke. I hope not. Hopefully Pitt will be 28-0 at the end of their first quarter.

Yes, having the stadium on campus, not to mention, right on the interstate, definitely helps us. And we DO do homecoming and tailgating much better.

I can understand how they felt. I was there when GT fumbled on its first four offensive plays against...Duke. Granted, GT didn't lose the fourth fumble, but still it was there. However in that game GT was less competitive against...Duke... than Pitt was against GT. BL would only coach 2 more games at GT.

I noticed that cross-charge watching the game. I am not sure why they would want to the DE to run outside. JT had a big play in the first series and an untouched touchdown in the second with the same defensive. Seems like that will be the last time we see that. As a defensive game plan, I would want the ball out of JT's hands (not forcing him to keep).

Thanks LD, Erin joe really did have a great game. He had the toughest assignment most of the day with outside runs to the right haVing to seal the edge. He is a much better player than I thought.

Pitts defense of the DE taking the A-back was just really dumb since they had no one taking JT.

It was strange to watch. It's like they went through the possibilities and just picked it without understanding how it works. Like the 2-3 exchange, that option defense has a defender impede the play-side A-back (PSA) before settling into his responsibility. The PSA is assigned to block the run support player, #3 in the option count: the SS. For this to work, #3 needs to be aggressively playing quarterback all the way. He's playing run aggressively, he gets blocked by the PSA just 2 yards past the LOS, but he's totally in the wrong spot because he isn't on Justin in the Alley.

I don't even know what it's called since nobody ever does it. When you call a defense designed to keep the ball in the QB's hands all I can think of is Tommie Frazier and are you sure that's a good idea?

Both times it looked like DE and SS were both going for AB. Maybe just blown assignment? Or maybe they expect charging LB to force the pitch.

Curious if they defend it the same later in the game.

That's a good point. If they thought their cross charge could force a pull-pitch, then they would have at least 2 on 1 blocker, leaving a guy free to make the tackle.

DE and OLB are the option players. The DE was taking the pitch Aback and forcing the QB not to pitch. The safety should be blocked by the blocking AB, but he should be assigned to the QB, not the pitch ABack. If we make all the blocks and they play all correct assignment, the play should still go for decent yards with this defensive setup. If we miss a block then the play does nt work like any other play that misses blocks.

I will do more film reviews before the weekend.

Yeah, I think this is what @zhavenor or someone else was talking about when they said that the QB reads both the LB and the DE at the snap. If both are pinching in, going after B-Back and QB at the snap, then it's a quick-pitch, or pull-pitch. However, if, as in this case, the DE stays out, then the DE, now the pitch key, is read as keep if he goes after the A-Back. I'm guessing, but I think that may be how it works.

I also suspect that maybe this explains some of what we saw this past Spring where Stargel was the DE playing the A-Back. This suspicion then leads me to suspect that this strategy may have worked against us in the past and so why we practiced against it in the Spring and ready for it now.

I know that I've gone a long way down the road of speculation here, so I'm just throwing it out as a "What do y'all think?" post.

If the QB is used to auto-quick pitching when he sees the cross-charging OLB, having the DE get between the QB and AB is a great strategy. You could theoretically even pick it off.

Planning on JT to mess up though? Lol nice try.
