I wonder the same thing(s). There has been speculation over the last few years in this forum regarding "messing with pitchers' stuff" which has led to dramatic backsliding and/or injury. My recall is ALL of it was speculation. Gooden is listed as "not active this season" on the roster now... I think its been that way since 2nd week of the season; but I just noticed it last week. I have no idea the reason. I think this is a fair observation.. but equally fair is to note there are quite a few guys on this year's team who have been on the opposite trajectory: Datoc is top of list... a senior who has improved and seen increasing role every year. Curry (so far) has shown no sign of backward progress from a great freshman year in 2017. Thomas (so far) is GREAT...compared to last year (which was really half a year...for him). Carpenter (similar to Datoc...but only a Jr) has improved each year. Just like these 4 key guys... there is an even longer list I'd reserve judgement on until we get deeper into the season. Generally... the staff is throwing waaaaaaaaaay more strikes; and nearly all the team pitching stats are improved over 2017. Granted...we are only 15 games into a season with better competition ahead (than behind) us. I really would like to know why 2017 was so awful from a pitching perspective. Something changed...and not the pitching personnel. It has not really changed too much...but across the board they are limiting 'freebies' compared to 2017.
