The Knight Commission believes the best way to repair the NCAA's "broken governance model" is to remove the football teams of the bowl subdivision from the association, forcing the top level of college football to govern itself as a separate entity.

I agree that it's interesting, but carving out FBS schools will create an entity whose primary function is revenue generation. Without the oversight of an independent organizational structure, there will be no way to keep the rich schools from simply getting richer and richer.

I agree with your assessment. But I understand why the rest of the universities in the US would find it far easier to deal with athletics without those few schools who prioritize athletics (and money) over education. I don't generally have any more sympathy for academia than I do for those who prioritize athletics so highly....the academics want the bread to be buttered too, they just go about it differently. This recommendation is really just an admission they don't know HOW to deal with the basic conflict, so they figure they'll try to cut off the wounded appendage.

There is also the issue of big time college basketball, which cannot be carved out as easily. When basketball coaches are making millions of dollars a year, the money problems in football are not that far removed.

the recommendation only dealt with football. every other sport would still be governed by the NCAA
