Breeze Airways have safely landed our boys at RDU and they will look to start the conference season at 1-0 after a decent effort earlier this week in Norman.

This isn't quite your father's ACC but still a lovely day of ACC basketball so get the crockpot rolling and settle in for the unofficial start of winter.

Boston College at Wake Forest ACCN Noon
Clemson at Miami ESPN2 Noon
Syracuse at Notre Dame The CW Noon
Georgia Tech at North Carolina ACCN 2 PM
Pitt at Virginia Tech ESPNU 2 PM
Virginia at SMU The CW 2:15 PM
Stanford at California ACCN 4 PM
Florida State at NC State ESPNU 4 PM

UNC is still led by 10th year senior RJ Davis, who is vying for back-to-back ACC POY but hasn't looked himself from long range yet. They add Top 10 Freshman guard Ian Jackson who had a monster game in their loss at home earlier this week to Alabama. Seth Trimble has been their not-so-secret most improved player and has finally found his place in the rotation after the departure of Cormac Ryan. Point guard Elliot Cadeau, whose absence at the end of our matchup in McCamish last year was very noticeable, has picked up some of the three point shooting chops that RJ Davis dropped and is coming into his own as a scorer. They are not a very large team w/ the loss of former 10th year senior Armando Bacot and Harrison Ingram. But as usual, they are an offense-first team and will look to run the floor and Cadeau does a wonderful job taking care of the ball, so they do not turn it over frequently - this game might be a shootout. That said, their size and interior-first scoring means they don't pull a lot of offensive rebounds. I believe they just use their athleticism and do a lot of slashing, so it'll be really important for DO and Baye to avoid foul trouble this game. Their defense is solid but nothing you'd win a national championship with - Georgia and Oklahoma both rate higher for what it's worth.

Have fun at the game @Connell62 - hopefully your visit to the Dean Dome goes better than mine.

Good summary. Thanks

Former Player Week continues. Jalon Moore at Oklahoma, now Tyzhaun Claude at UNC.

In the Heels' loss to Alabama on Wednesday, Claude came off the bench for a season high 10 minutes and had 6 points (3-3 FG) and 5 rebounds.

Not our most memorable center in the last decade but he gave us some good minutes. His late and-1 against UNC last season was extremely cathartic.

I have watched a few unc games this year, and I have been unimpressed, mainly by their offensive strategy. They don’t appear to have one most of the time. They rely heavily on dribble penetration to the rim by their 3 guards to the extent that they really don’t do anything else. It has been a losing recipe against teams with equal or better athleticism at all 5 positions on the floor, for example, Alabama. However, against GT their style could be a major advantage for them and a major problem for us, since 1v1 and help defense against dribble drives to the rim have been a serious weakness of this GT team at times this season.

Cadeau is a hot head and is prone to committing aggressive dumb fouls, so it would be nice to take advantage of that to get him into foul trouble or get under his skin or both.

RJ Davis is a professional flopper, so he will draw a ton of fouls. GT needs to avoid falling for his tricks to stay out of foul trouble ourselves.

Trimble is sneaky good, and for my money is their best scoring guard, especially off of penetration, but he defaults to RJ Davis who shoots at a much higher volume, so hopefully Trimble won’t get going against GT.

Their freshman, Ian Jackson, is more talented than everyone else on their team, and looked like the only player that really belonged in the game with the athletes on the Alabama team during that game. Luckily, their guards don’t like to share the ball, so he doesn’t always get many opportunities and has been a bit streaky as a result, and just because he is a freshman. Hopefully he will have an anonymous game against GT.

I won't be able to watch the game live today, so those of you going into chat play nice if things aren't going well for us. 😉

Javian McCollum remains out. Reeves unlikely to play. No word on Sutton, but can’t expect much contribution if he is available simply based on time missed and lack of experience. Can’t dwell on winning or losing today. Where is Baye Ndongo’s head & heart is my question and issue. Conference opener away at an elite team seeking revenge over last year’s upset. Time for those players who buy in to this program to show up.

16.5 point underdogs today per FanDuel. That feels about right if we try to match their pace - they are capable of ripping off a 10-0 run in 90 seconds at home.

CDS's pregame presser was upbeat. He was pretty happy with the team's play against Oklahoma and I agree with him. The defensive effort was good. We'll see if we can start to stack solid effort games.

Just touched down at RDU myself. Going to find a good spot for some pregame lunch and beverages.

I sat beside a GT basketball letterman from the 70’s on our flight. He told me he goes down and watches practice 2-3x per week. He gave me TONS of good nuggets regarding the team, as well as Damon and the staff.

He said the Damon you see on the sidelines is much different than the one in practice. He’s been on their asses past couple weeks. He expects them to play well today.

Glad to hear this about CDS getting after them. Paying close attention, we’ve even seen some of this during timeouts in recent games, which has been different from usual for CDS.

This North Carolina team is vulnerable in my opinion. They don’t play a good style of basketball, but they do still have very good players, so they can still beat up on teams with less talented players. The question for me in this game is can the GT players play up to the best of their individual abilities and also play good team basketball to overcome any talent/physical discrepancies that might exist between our roster and theirs.

Good half. Another scoring drought but I feel like Baye is locking in. He’s playing good defense and affecting shots but knew when he was beat and avoided taking silly fouls. DO took a dumb frustration foul after giving up an ORB to RJ Davis but this comes with the territory with putting the team on the back of an 18 year old. Nait isn’t stuffing the scoresheet but he’s been impactful on defense. Gonna be some tired legs late in the 2nd half with Javian out though.

DO has 2 fouls, Baye has 0. And we are down 1. I think this is where we could best hope to be at this point. It’s a good effort regardless of the result and the team is clearly growing.

Good effort today but that last defensive series killed us. 3.6 on the clock and we give an open look, offensive board, a second offensive board and a foul to go down 7 points. That was a disastrous 30 seconds

UNC is terrible and that isht just best Tech. I see the curse of not shooting at a decent percentage is still alive and well for this program. Every advantage a team can have with 6 min remaining and can't take it. Pitiful. I am beginning to think when Cremins left for SC and came back he permanently curse this program forever.

Good overall effort...

Nait HAS TO be better.

Imagine if Baye made 2 of the 5 FT he missed. Would have been a different last 2 of the game.
