I believe that this is true. The timing wasn't good when CPJ retired and it's not very good to replace Collins now. I think TStan is trying to buy some breathing room. Pick up some better coordinators that can take over if he cans Collins mid '22 and hopefully get ahead of next year's...
I think we should let them play the game. After watching our game and then the Iron Bowl this past Saturday, I'm not nearly as sure as you are that Bama does it this year.
It's occurred to me that Tstan may be holding all the cards here. By getting donor commitments to cover the buyout and releasing that information to the media, he was free to let Collins know that he had the means to fire him now. Collins' choices were either be fired and never snif a P5 HC...
Yeh - well, it's kinda' his job to say that. Better than Braine saying, "We're a mediocre program that will show occasional flashes of brilliance."(I know that's not the quote, but that's what I heard)
Yeh - a bit more reading and it seems Griffin and Peterson were pretty close. Peterson not only appointed Griffin to interim after DRad, but asked him to come back out of retirement when 'squatch bailed. Guessing he was Bud's sock puppet....

edit - web search tells me that senior associate AD Paul Griffin was...
Guessing that he knows he's failing and his boss is breathing down his neck. I still haven't given up on TStan - If he's doing his job right, we won't know anything about behind the scenes until he makes a move. His biggest mistake(IMO) so far was buying what Collins was sellling.
