I like the bye. It makes conference championship games matter and gives a concrete reward for winning the championship. If a "better" team doesn't get the bye, so what? More games for the "better" teams to find out if they are really better.
There are plenty of non competitive games between the big brand teams. And when a big brand team looks like it might get beat, people tune in in droves. Just take a look at our TV numbers this year.
People do want to see lower conference champions beat teams from the big conferences though. And there’s history of that happening when the opportunity is there.
It's an interesting debate. At the end of the day, at least we're debating over the 12th team and not leaving out an undefeated conference champ like last year. If it were last year, who would the 4 playoff teams be?
