Yellow Jackets secondary has less experience - but greater trust in 2022

What Travares Tillman is counting on is better organization and communication, along with trust and a decent collection of talent, can take the Jackets’ secondary places that they could not reach last year.

The play of the secondary last year and CGC's reaction to it was borderline negligence. Our Head Coach, who fancies himself a defensive genius and a Defensive Back specialist coach, just allowed season long communication and playing problems to exist without addressing them and thus costing us games. I think ONE secondary coach will help and will take a wait and see approach if retaining Thacker but reducing his job to simply calling the D works. Our D can't get any worse.

Of course they will be better. They were historically bad last year and the three players mostly responsible are gone.

Only if the defense can get significantly more pressure on opposing QBs. If not, then we are in for another long fall.

I don't care how talented a position group is, if no one's on the same page, then it's just not going to work. Case in point, our secondary last season. As bad as our defense was overall (bottom 10th percentile in DFEI), our secondary play was rated even lower.

Hopefully all the new faces on the field and in the coaches box will fix that. Sometimes you got to wash everything away and start new. Hopefully this is one of those times where that happens and GT defense comes off better. There's definitely talent in the defensive backfield.

When CPJ replaced Erk Russell at GA Southern CPJ tells a story about Erk coming to a practice. Erk said what the he'll are you doing? CPJ said being the head coach/overseeing stuff. Erk said go run the offense because that's what got you here. The rest is history.

Maybe the offensive transition made Collins think he needed to be with the offense, and he didn't have an Erk Russell around to set him straight.

Whatever the case here's hoping Collins is fully focused on D. Some of the secondary fate will depend on getting some pressure on the QB. And some will take better coaching.

What will make them better.

Pickett and Sam Howell leaving will help.
Having depth at DL will help.
Having Sims make accurate throws to make first downs and keep them off field will help.
Having a do or die attitude on team will help.
Having 3 back up Qbs that are not option qbs will make better practice . 1 vs 2 will tougher.


Stat wise they are better w no change in dB or coaches.



I think last 3 years we had very poor / delayed recognition of where the pass was going.

The extra cgc in the safety and dB room will make major improvements in getting our dB closer to the receiver. We will not look incompetent !

With the general team improvements and being competent in d backfield our stats will make a jump .


If Thack and cgc can call a mayhem defense we could be fun to watch on defense as well as offense.

I think the dB will do OK in most games with some great plays and some bad plays. I hope the 1st Q bend, 2nd Q bend , 3rd Q bend, 4th Q Break D is gone.

Yes, a defensive backfield performs better when there’s havoc up front, but our backfield’s performance isn’t explained by our front 6. It’s just as arguable that the front 6 would get more sacks if we had covered for a little longer.

Against UVA and Pitt, their receivers were getting open fast. It would have taken a fantastic pass rush to got to the QB before someone came open

If our DBs improve, it’s because of new players and new coaching
