The last few years we have seen the template for how public figures defend themselves become engraved in stone. Admit nothing, deny everything. Claim nefarious motivation behind the charges against you. Then go on the attack. Attack governing institutions, the press and anyone who may actually have been hurt by your actions.

Finally there is the deflection, which was not used directly in this case, but involves finding some supposed wrong “done by the other side” that was not reported or not prosecuted.

We have become a society of barbarians.
