Was our defense hamstrung in the past?

I think it is true that teams do still practice 1 v. 1's some of the time, but the majority of the time, especially during the season, it is 1's vs. scout teams. The article did in fact leave that important point that out, which was disappointing. So, while there was a lot of truth in the article, the article did seem to overstate the truth by not qualifying it re: the scout team.

If you think that lack of preparation for defenses against CPJ’s offense was an advantage, then our defense had the same issue against conventional offenses. No matter if there was a practice squad simulating an offense, there is less time preparing against the standard offenses. This hurts the defense somewhat, but I think the offensive advantage was way stronger. Ultimately to me this hurt recruiting, which hurt our defense more, because there’s no scheme/coach to compensate on the defensive side as good as CPJ.
