So frustrating how we really don't have "uniforms" anymore. We just wear different things for every game. We have no identity.
I just cant grasp why GT wont go all in on White and Gold. Like Tennessee does for white and orange. It is such an easy win branding wise! I honestly just don't think the marketing people we have even know our history or colors tbh.

Do you wear the same thing to work every day? Do you not have an identity?

I can understand having a preference and all, even a strong preference. But sometimes I wonder if some people invoke principles like "lack of identity" or "tradition" to justify a pout.

Not sure I understand your point.

I think the question is really whether or not college football is different from other sports. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t. Maybe it should be. Maybe it shouldn’t be.

But the “pout,” as you put it, is that watching a team like the NY Yankees or the Braves, or watching the Green Bay Packers or the Falcons, one knows instantly who they are watching. This is also true for some college football teams we could name. It establishes a brand that speaks of history and tradition. A team like Alabama, with their uniforms that remain almost virtually unchanged, establishes an identity that gets passed down from generation to generation, which helps recruiting and which partly contributes to an overall culture that wins championships.

Oregon also has a strong brand that seems to include rarely wearing the same uniform twice. But they have an entire design aesthetic that no one else can match. When I turn on a TV and see them I know instantly who they are and it all seems to work for them.

But just changing up uniform combinations each week does not make a strong statement of identity. Sadly, our rivals in Athens have established a strong identity. Ours used to be as strong as theirs but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

Huh? It's pretty standard in sports at all levels to have a specific set of uniforms you wear regularly. I would imagine most people here do not work jobs that require uniforms, but plenty do.

Navy blue helmets with black face masks and white & gold GT logo on the sides, white jersies with navy blue numbers, and navy blue pants with white and gold stripes …. hmmm … would make for a sinister-looking combination.

How often does uga change the color of their helmet?

To me it is clear that once you add a second color for a helmet, you need to stop multiplying the other variables. The more variables you add the more you can lose continuity of design and lose an easily identifiable brand. I’m not saying don’t add a second helmet. Just don’t keep adding color combinations after that. Adding a 3rd helmet would jump the shark.

How long ago was it that we had this uniform-based identity of which you speak? Back in 1984 when I arrived we wore black and gold as our home uniforms. Somewhere around 1987, maybe 1988, we changed to blue and gold. And from then on we've worn so many different variations of blue, many shades of gold, many shades of yellow, and white. Some of the uniforms have been hideous but not because of the colors, mostly because of the design. Especially the ones with the beehive motif. But in all that time we've not been consistent with our uniforms. So how much farther back do we have to go to find this established brand that our uniform helped perpetuate?

I feel like we are far from the times when GT was a brand that everyone who knew anything about college football instantly identified as a powerhouse or even a widely known sports brand. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think I am. Perhaps in the southeast it has been known even beyond the times of Dodd. But I grew up in the DC area. I didn't know GT played football until I saw Mark Price play basketball as a freshman and then looked up GT sports. I knew Texas, Penn State, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, UCLA, USCw, Florida, Nebraska, ND, Clemson, UGA because of Herschel Walker and a few others. I knew some of the regional schools simply because of where I lived. So I knew BC, Maryland, UVA, Pitt, Cuse and some more. I was dimly aware that UNC played football (more because of Lawrence Taylor than anything else).

If I thought our brand was going to be perpetuated by a standard uniform I'd be all over it. But I think we just need to win more consistently and I don't give a crap about our uniforms, mostly because people argue about them so much 😁

Without correcting any of your potential misconceptions about the history, the short answer is that you don’t create a brand by perpetuating chaos.
