Triple Option

Seeing as a week ago most here though that if we beat Pitt we'd be in the driver's seat for the coastal, its hard to say he could never win an ACC championship - the ACC is just that bad.

Beating a top 10 opponent? No, I don't think so, unless like AlabamaBuzz said, its an early season win over a grossly overranked team.

A 10 win season? Not without some major staffing changes.

Given enough time, he could maybe, possibly accomplish all three. But that might take 10 seasons at the rate we are going, and I don't think he will be here that long.

It's not coming back to Georgia Tech so what's the point of hanging on hoping for your old girlfriend to come back?
Not sure what you mean by “hanging onto an old girlfriend.” I thought the point of this thread was to explore what kind of offensive schemes can win at Tech and which cannot. We have a lot of data on that question but no consensus yet.

@Lotta Juice - good post. I hope you're right!

@ilovetheoption - yeah, I'd count Coastal Carolina as a triple-based team. I do love watching them. I wish CPJ had done some of what they do now back when he was messing with the pistol. Not that I think we ever *needed* to run the pistol at all but, because we did, I think a lot of CC's stuff would have been nice and not too hard to install.
Ever watch Hawaii when CPJ ran their offense?

Do we have data on the girlfriends question or the offenses question? I'm not sure we have consensus on either.

"mature" married guy here, so not entirely sure why I'm asking ;)

You can see him on the sideline, and he seems to have no issue slingin the ball:

(screens used to be 4:3 and low rez--so the picture is not what most of us are used to. This looks like old VHS)

The point is a handful of fonts are hung up on the triple option and it's not coming back to GT. It's time to move on.

I haven’t read a single post by anyone who claims that the triple option is coming back to Tech.

Same for air raid offense. Though that has been mentioned a few times too.

I think people are just speculating about what offensive scheme might work at Tech since we have lots of data on what won’t work.

Teams used to hate playing us. Now we’re an easy out. IIWII

If I had to guess opposing coaches do not think of this team as an easy out (GT has some young game changers on offense) but rather if they come prepared they can out fox this current coaching staff. When it came to playing GT during the PJ era I think if their team was not considerably bigger, stronger and faster than GT those coaches probably had a few sleepless nights leading up to the game.

I remember even Vince Lombardi used to worry that some pro team would spring the triple option on him. When asked by a reporter what would happen, Lombardi replied, “We’d be embarrassed.”

And, for the record, it was CGC who told the AD prior to this season that he expected to win this year -hence the “win in 21” campaign. Maybe CGC should have claimed one more year in his massive largest cultural transition of a college football team in the history of the universe.

Just beat Duke and put together 2 wins in a row and most fans will forgive.
went to an alumni club meeting this summer and the GT Alum Assn folks were talking up how much CGC was saying he was ready to win this season.

Nebraska was last decent in the 90s. They dumped Frank Solich, the option, and their identity when they tried to install Bill Callahan's west coast offense... They haven't been anything near the same since.
Yes. I live in Lincoln. Problem is recruiting talent for such offenses can’t be well done In the upper Midwest. NE hs football does not compare to that in GA to say the least. Osborne was able to recruit from FL, TX, ... Nebraska’s success in the last few weeks has been supported by option plays. Martinez is a good option QB but he is from CA btw

Agreed. I asked one what he was smoking since Jeff left GaSo for Army... lol
First, since the new GS AD came from the SEC, I don't see him plucking from the PJ tree. Though Brent Davis would be a great choice, IMO.
Second, about 20 something years ago, I'm sitting in PJ's office. We're just chewing the fat, checking his stocks, telling each other jokes, etc.
I ask him - who on your staff right now would make a great head coach one day.
He said Monken. Without blinking an eye.
I asked why - even though I knew and liked Jeff a lot, I was surprised by the answer.
PJ said organization. And that Monken gets it and understands it.

And Ga Southern fans cringe at the sound of Kleinlein's name almost - but not as much - as they do as the mention of BVG.

I moved on the minute CPJ retired. But football still requires fundamentals such as blocking and tackling. Regardless of schemes. I want to see a good offense and good defense. Not get blown out several times a year.

I think we all do. There's just disagreement on how long the honeymoon should last given the transition that needed to occur and the covid pandemic. Those are reasonable disagreements people can have. Those whining about the triple option are just whining to whine.

I sometimes wonder what our passing stats would have looked like in 2014 if Thomas were just slightly worse at running the option. JT wasn't quite as accurate as Tevin but he wasn't too far off and had a much bigger arm and better options at wideout. But he was so good with the option stuff that it was probably hard to call a pass.

Just watched their condensed game against NW. The offense was beautiful to watch. Plenty updated for the new generation, but enough option porn in there for the old farts and option purest. Loved it!!

Yep. Control the clock and control your destiny. If you are ahead there is no value in a quick score if you can grind the clock, grind the defense down and then pad your lead after all that.
