Transfer Portal: Who's Coming and Going (2022 Roster)

The truth is the transfer portal is actually going to be a bit of a fad. A lot of these kids end their careers trying to go somewhere else. Once enough fo that starts happenign the only transfers we will see are gibbs like.
i really think jamious griffin entered the portal expecting a lot of love from the schools that offered him originally like florida state, miami, ole miss, auburn etc.

i think these kids get a massive dose of reality when it turns out your high school rating doesn’t mean much and teams now just care about the film you have out there from college.

"...the transfer portal is actually going to be a bit of a fad..."
I respectfully disagree...I think the portal is the new "normal"...over 1000 CFB players have entered the portal......
No one knows where this will lead CFB...or GT....the only thing clear is that NCAA is a dead man walking...
The Kraken has been unleashed....

Did Kenneth Kirby use up all of his eligibility? Noticed he's no longer listed on the roster.

I believe he has 1 year left.
If he is gone that just sort of adds to the list of players who transferred in who did not really contribute ( though if they leave with a degree than that is very good for them).

It has definitely been a mixed bag in terms of transfers.

I agree with this 100%. I can think of a few hits and a few misses with the portal, but mostly we get guys who are similar to the ones we recruited straight from HS. They become members of the 50% in the middle.

I guess the point to remember about all the transfers is that something motivated them to enter the portal. Maybe it's in the classroom or dorms or their main squeeze. It could also be they were not getting the PT because the talent ahead of them was simply a lot better. Maybe they don't like their position coach or the head coach or the way someone in the broadcast booth pronounces their name. It could be almost anything.

But we have to understand these young men come to us with a issue they hope we will solve. Maybe it's not solvable by a new school or team.

The portal is an easy way for the coaching staff to encourage those players who they deem as non-contributors to Hit the Bricks. Occasionally a really good player will get pissed and leave thinking they can improve their lot somewhere else but the vast majority of these portal guys, I would say around 70% are below the line as Collins would say. They can try to latch on at some backwoods nobody school and hope to be second string there but that is really about it.

That's why I don't think these transfers are in general worth the effort. If you are going to use the portal, target someone who is already a proven starter at someplace that is playing a fairly high caliber of football and actively recruit him to come to Georgia Tech. Use the NIL to actually financially incent that individual to join your team.

Go Jackets!

Mixed bag is correct, the transfers will not compensate for what we lost.

2021 - Nick Pendley OG, Miss St - started 1 game, played in 3 others due to injuries, eligibility remaining
2021 - Trad Beatty, QB, Temple - one apprearance (KSU)

The players in bold are the ones I would consider to have made significant contributions during their time so far.
4 are OL - all moved on at this point
1 TE
1 WR
1 K
1 LB - coming back for one more year.

Likely due to necessity the 4 OL who have been healthy have all been starters.
The WR, TE And K all were significant contributors in their 1 year.
The only defensive player who really made an impact is returning for a COVID year. Most of the defensive players have been disappointments, unable to crack the starting lineups.

Don’t forget how Harris made the offense tough with all the disruption he caused in practice….

Weird how when I look at it this way we had one of the best offensive lines in the ACC, certainly the best in the Coastal. 😳

Pretty fascinating only 27.8% of those in the portal are finding landing spots elsewhere. I am certain this is a reality check for some of these players who thought it may have been a much easier path forward into another school. For many they’re finding out that the competition within the portal is more daunting than rising through the depth chart at their current location. Now granted many of these athletes are in the portal for various reasons and not just because they’re “unhappy or were sold a bag of goods and they’ve discovered that they were misled.” This should be a very valuable lesson to all the current players at GT (other colleges) that it’s time to take a step back and receive some honest feedback of your “future athletically (pro sports vs. professional workforce” and where you fit best. Some of these athletes wouldn’t of had the privilege of being admitted into their current school via regular admission standards but yet are there due to their athletic abilities. So sometimes it’s best to use athletics to open doors for you academically and graduate from their school and enter professional workforce. So count your blessings and be sure to have a plan before you find yourself on the outside of college athletics and out of school because you failed to see the full implications of a rushed decision because you “thought I deserve to be playing more.”

I think another reason for the low percentage of "landing spots" is that there is a surplus of college athletes as the 2020 COVID pass year has allowed more athletes to continue to play rather than being done eligibility. So there are more players looking for the last chance and teams are full as they have continued to take in new recruiting classes and lost fewer players.

We've talked about this a bit in the baseball forum, bottom line is that the 2021 and 2022 classes will be competing against a glut of older more experienced players than they would have without COVID. COVID kind of sucks (tic).

I think Watson has been one of our better DBs when he was in--he just wasn't in as much as a lot of other players. For what it's worth, PFF scores him pretty well.

But without them we'd be compensated even less. Seems if you're losing through the portal, you have to replenish through the portal or you're replacing older players with recruits.
In the OL case does the portal allow you to bring your younger (recruits) players along while you also have some experience playing?
