The Demetra "Growl"...

I like Andy, but he hasn't really grown on me the way Gaudin did... I think he is observant, and I think he and Sean make a good team, but there's just something that's missing for me... Perhaps most noticeable for me is the "growl" in his delivery of big plays... I appreciate his enthusiasm, and I am sure every announcer has his own special delivery when the blood gets pumping, but his particular brand just isn't doing it for me - at least not to this point...

Hope it doesn't come across as too critical - like Seinfeld and Costanza critiquing the latest girlfriend... I just still miss voices of the past with whom I was more comfortable - especially Big Al, who was the one I grew up with...

Other opinions?

SWMBO made a comment the other day. I was watching the highlight show, and she looked up and asked who the announcer was? She then stated that he was a very good announcer.

I don't know where he gets it, perhaps it is taught in "broadcaster's school", but I don't like it. Those idiots broadcasting the dwags, Scott Howard and zaire, do it too and it's worse with them.

I know. You might ask what's a good Jacket fan doing listening to the dwags? It's complicated but it's something I have in common with John Dewberry.

He had a rough day in the VT game. Even before halftime he just laughed at himself and said Sean Bedford was instructed to punch him the next time he says Justin Thomas instead of Matthew Jordan. I've listened to quite a few games this year and I think he does a good job.

The problem is that the bar was set so high by Gaudin and Wes, it's hard to live up to that billing. I think Andy is doing a good job, and he'll hopefully improve over time.
This.

I didn't realize how much I missed Gaudin until I played the new Madden NFL.

Hearing Wes Durham call the Falcons every week doesn't help either.

I think Andy will be fine, but he has some awfully big shoes to fill.

I liked gaudin from the get go. Better personality

I am having a tough time with demetra. Kinda dry. Seems so canned and corporate almost like over schooled in announcing.

Hopefully he gets more comfortable and starts showing more random personality

I just cant see demetra tweeting out a thwga sign he sits on for the uga game like gaudin did

I'm not convinced that he is a true "FAN" of GT yet. He will probably get there in time. When he does, he will probably come across as more authentic than he does now. I think Wes was a huge true fan of GT and it came across plain as day. Gaudin was getting there. Andy is polished and all, but I want the sincerity too. I want the radio voice to sound like he loves GT the way I do. I would take a passionate "wohooo!!!!!" like Roddy gave after "the pick" over a polished radio call any day.

or a "Are you kidding me???" by Sean Bedford after the blocked punt and return last year.

You've perfectly summarized it. I cannot agree with you more.
I have nothing against him but it's hard for me to listen to the broadcasts with all the growling. I wish he didn't do it. Singers sometimes use growling too (Whitney, Beyonce)... but they'd ruin a good song if they growled through the entire riff.

Unfair to compare to Al Ciraldo. If Al didn't truly love Georgia Tech, then he was an even better professional than he gets credit for, because he convinced us that he did. White and Gold, through and through. It is unrealistic to think that even Wes Durham had the affection for the team and the school that Ciraldo exhibited. The modern era guys are trained to tone down the "homerism", I think.

I think his voice is kinda annoying...like he's trying too hard. But I could care less as long as GT plays well.

Not trying to compare Andy to the others - just expressing my affection for the voices I grew up with and had a high degree of familiarity with... My dad (AE '56) was critical of Big Al - largely because of his tendency to call a dropped ball as a "catch", then a drop... Every time he did that, my dad would say, "well, that's a fumble..." Still makes me laugh...

After listening to a lot of radio call on Saturday, the growl is not growing on me - again, I like the play-by-play and Sean's color commentary, but the growling delivery is just irritating...
