Ga Institue of Technology isn't a corporation. They treated him like he shot someone. He wasn't able to talk to the players. Sounds very immature unless he reacted unprofessional or caused a scene. Bad optics again by the heads of matech. What's new?
Okay, if you say so. The Institute has 14,000 employees. I guess it's just a really large small business.

it’s just funny to me when the swarm flexes it’s expertise. i’m not sure why the AD candidate list doesn’t include more of our users because they all have great ideas
LOL. Trust me, I wasn't 'flexing', just providing context. I always find it surprising how people interpret simple relevant statements of fact as some type of value innuendo.

Relevant statement of fact? That is rich. You have no idea if your perspective is relevant or not and it is certainly no statement of fact. It is an opinion of what you think might happen if you were fired as an executive. There have been plenty of people who have been fired from a corporate job but were still allowed to speak to their employees and were not escorted immediately out of the door. Maybe those situations are relevant and maybe they are not. Either way, what you think might happen to you or should happen to others in a completely different environment is neither relevant nor a statement of fact. And, yes, you projecting yourself into another person's completely different situation is some type of value innuendo.

I don't really get the issue with Stansbury. If the decision was made to not fire GC, what else could he have said? If folks fault Stansbury for not firing GC, that's a different story. But so many people are worked up about the fact that Stansbury came out and said he has his man. What should he have said to save his job?
From what I understand, ADTS had hitched his job to CGC. There was a lot of pressure to replace CGC and ADTS was not interested in firing him. As the demands for change continued to get louder, it became clear that ADTS had no intention of making a change - at least not now. Eventually, the money always wins out. Enough of the right people were fed up, and the conversation changed into: "Hold him accountable or you'll be held accountable". ADTS made his decision...

Generally speaking, it seems like ADTS did a good job for most sports at Tech. Unfortunately, the money sports will always be the most critical and football is the king. If you fail at football and/or men's basketball, you have failed - regardless of how successful everything else is.

The reasons, as I can see them, to escort someone off the premise after firing them are as follows.

1. To prevent them from taking corporate secrets with them. I don't see how a fired coach would take anything of value in that way with him or would even have access to. The closest I could think of is if an assistant leaves and they used insider recruiting info to recruit someone saying that the other staff didn't think as highly of them as others, but that wouldn't apply to this situation. Maybe there is and I can't think of it but I don't see it.

2. Fear of emotional response. Either through violence or negative words and bad talking. The former I see no reason to believe, as Collins has never had any hint of anything like that and the buy out would largely remove any stress factor related to money that is often related to violence after losing a job. As far as bad talking goes, if you're firing the AD then who is there really to bad talk? The president is largely hands off and you're going to be getting new leadership in the athletic department anyways. Maybe Collins just blew up and had to be escorted because his state of being was too unpredictable at the time. I don't see it, but could be.

3. Reason of firing warrants it. If you do something that is going to get you arrested, and that's why you're being fired. Yeah. Escort away, and to prison. Losing too much isn't that though.

Probably some other reasons I am missing, but I don't really see any real harm that would have come (or reasonably believed would have come) from having Collins address the team to tell them he will no longer be their coach.

Just saying it's SOP doesn't really fly for me as you would expect the reason it to be that falls into one of the above.

So my guess is one of two things.

1. Collins was told he was fired, and was given an escort to follow him as he did what he needed to do and then left. That is reasonable that a fired employee wouldn't have free reign to go wherever. Collins then decided he didn't want to address the team and his escort stayed with him until he got to his car.

2. Whoever made the decision was annoyed they had to deal with it, and just wanted it over as soon as possible and viewed a team meeting as unnecessary, '

I think 1 is less likely than 2, but in either case someone from within the department should have been the one to tell the players. Either allow Collins to do so, and see that he does, have Key do it, or do it yourself. The players deserve the respect of finding about it before it goes to social media and is reported.

Just imagine the bad optics when a player filmed CGC sobbing as he told them he'd been fired and droned on endlessly about 'elite'. THAT would be the bad optics. Nobody cares that he was escorted out after being fired. There is nothing good that can come from allowing him to talk to players or even roam the hallways after being fired...

I think as long as Deion, Chadwell, Dell, and maybe BOB are legitimately in the discussion, we probably (hopefully) won’t lose too many to the portal. Trust me, these kids and their parents know who’s being discussed. If it’s Deion, no one leaves.

And, I am sure he has the players' contact information (email addresses, cell numbers, etc.). He can send them a letter/note if he likes. I am sure if he sent something to Brent Key for the players' consumption, assuming it was not destructive in nature, it was shared with the players.

I love how everyone is comparing being fired as a head coach in college football to being fired from a corporate job as if they are even remotely similar. Yes, I have been fired and escorted out of the office without getting to chance to tell my employees and coworkers, "Goodbye." I am also not so delusional to believe that my job is the same as being a HC in college football
They could have fired his *** down in Orlando and left him on the Tarmac and told him to find his own way home like what happened to lane kiffen

Ok. Perhaps, Not sure what that has to do with my post. In fact, I have never made one statement about how he should have been fired nor have I criticized or commended the way he was fired.

Ok. Would you prefer narcissistic? What do you call someone who thinks that things that happen to others should happen exactly like it would happen to themselves regardless if the situations are remotely similar or not.,
Except it did happen exactly like it happened to him. I think you're the one arguing it should be different than what was reality.

State employees. Is it a business? Yes, but not all business are corp.
Of course, but I don't think that's pertinent. Are you in saying that just because they are state employees that they should be treated like special butterflies? They are big boys and should expect to be treated like big boys and not children.

Whew.

Skimming responses on here because it seems like a lot of fire and ice over very small things.

Tech made a major mistake hiring Collins. Let me put that another way. There was absolutely no justifiable reason to hire someone with no head coaching ability or even any future promise of ever being an effective coach.

Yes, for many people, this is hindsight.

Now, here’s the problem. Some people could see Collins for what he was from the very beginning. Some of us, from personal and professional experience, felt like we could see through him.

Those who could not see what he was are angry that they were fooled. Or feeling sheepish. But human nature doesn’t like to own that level of misjudgment. We don’t like being fooled. Once we emotionally hitch our ride to a certain horse, even when it turns out to be a nag, we will continue in subtle ways to justify our choice. At best, we will say, “Well, I was certainly wrong but you have to understand that at the time…..and other people were thinking….and the choices we were dealing with…” etc.

We should all be glad he’s gone, glad Tech acted decisively when there was finally no other choice, and feel good that we now have a chance to move on.

Worrying about Collins’ feelings, even arguing about whether he was treated right, is a colossal waste of time. Our priorities should be to move on, support the team, and have fun arguing over who our next coach should be. Collins deserves no more of our time, sympathy or attention, unless you want to write him a personal note.

That last paragraph is the key point - I'm personally still not clear who ended up speaking with the players and when that happened but SOMEONE within the leadership hierarchy should have spoken with them immediately after CGC was told he was released (which may have been after SM rumors). I don't know this didn't occur but if not, it should have. And yes, this whole thread/topic will largely not matter a month from now either way..
