Since we’re slinging it this year

Here’s the “DETMER” stat definition—>throw for a ton of yards, throw a TD, throw a pick, just throw it deep and often.

Here’s our guys from last year:

So, overall
  • Completion percentages aren’t anything to write home about
  • DETMER is average.
  • Pyron’s yards/dropback was the best out of what we had.
  • There’s no win % added here, but EPA/dropback is the closest. Pyron is barely net positive.
  • TD/INT ratio is really hurt by not having a lot of TDs.
On that last one, a bunch of you are might be saying “whoa, Captain Obvious!”. For our passing stats, we were last in the ACC in yards (and yards/game). Last in yards/play. Third from last in TDs. And UVA only played 10 games, while VT only played 11, so their stats are artificially depressed.

Also, GOOD GOD WAKE! Boy, did they sling it.

I’ll probably catch heat for referring to the spring game, as it is meaningless and I am water trash. But we did appear to sling it there. I expect a couple long balls with our speedy guys.

Nah, watch the Spring Game.

Looking back at last year’s games, our offense just WASN’T THERE for huge stretches, including entire games.

I watched part of Minn-Neb yesterday, and I have always said it’s a cop out to say “they have no offensive/defensive identity”—but those teams had no offensive identities. I couldn’t see anything that looked like a game plan.

I would love to see a plan today

Anybody else get deja vu watching Sims & Nebraska last night. I felt that deep in my soul...then I remembered that out game is tonight! Go Tech.

Yep. Sims was known for bad decisions and throwing interceptions at his former school (GT).

And tonight we're starting a QB who was known for making bad decisions and throwing interceptions at his former school (TAM). 😬

Goes without saying that I'm hoping we have a different outcome. Go Jackets!!

yep, --I think you only have a 2 choices in OFF game plan-- 1- have an off line that can block so you basically run the ball with a few passes to scare them. 2- have a very accurate passer who can pick apart a DEF with quick throws with a few runs thrown in . of course it would help to have a def that can get you the ball

I'll take a 0 EPA over a -0.2 any day considering how impactful that is (at around 30 pass attempts per game, that's 6 points subtracted a game on average).

With a Haynes King thread moving into a rating systems debate, I got to thinking about this. I feel like we are CRUSHING it! Is there an update to be found? I feel like we would compare favorably…

Haynes King

0.43 EPA/Play, 63% Comp%, 812 yds, 10 TD, 0.90 DETMER

Lots of yards, some TDs, not that many INTs.

Formula is this

That’s a pretty underwhelming DETMER… I guess last weekend really clouded my perception of how clean he has been playing all year.

Converting a couple more red zone opportunities would help too…

DETMER is a “**** it, I’m throwing it”. Brett Favre would go high DETMER—lots of TDs, lots of INTs, lots of passes into triple coverage, lots of throws into the end zone.

DETMER is a “I’m creating a lot of points—either for us OR for them” kind of stat. It’s for fun.

Even though I made a comment about game management in the other thread, King isn’t a “**** it, I’m throwing into triple coverage” guy so far.

Zach Pyron3/5 (60% Comp)200100.034.00-1.18-5.8920%

Stat ratio not needed unless looking at large number of reps

Zack has 20 yds on 3 complrtions.
3 completions to our guys and 1 to theirs. (Last 3 games for T Marshall under Coach Johnson - 5 to us and 4 to them). Looking at Zach come of bench and do what it takes won't fit into formulas. In Tennesse game - TM had srats for days, but should have pitched to benson.

Personally love the warrior in Marshall and Pyron. Cant coach it. In practice I bet Pyron is pushing King.
