Saturday, August 15 -- Scrimmage #2
Georgia Tech officially ended its 2015 Training Camp by scrimmaging at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday morning. The Yellow Jackets ran close to 100 plays as the Sept. 3rd season opener continues to close in.

The offense scored on each of its first three possessions, with junior QB Justin Thomas under center for his lone two drives of the day - the first ending in a Thomas to Ricky Jeune touchdown pass and third culminating with a 15-yard run from Patrick Skov. Senior QB Tim Byerly's one-yard touchdown punctuated Tech's second drive.

B-backs Skov, a graduate transfer from Stanford, and freshman Marcus Marshall each had strong days on the ground.

"The first-team offense was pretty good," said head coach Paul Johnson. "But as the scrimmage wore on, the defense got better. Patrick (Skov) really played well. Marcus was with the first team, and he and Patrick rotated. It was his (Skov's) best performance to date. It was good to see him be physical and finish runs forward."

Skov finished, unofficially, with eight carries for 86 yards and two touchdowns. He also reeled in a 24-yard pass from Byerly later in the scrimmage.

The defense forced a pair of turnovers with Step Durham recovering a fumble and Jamal Golden picking off pass.

Tech players will have tomorrow off and classes begin on Monday.

When we had cox backing up dwyer,he played very sparinly. I think he still made nfl for a while.
Hope a big bruising "fullback type" plays well AND gets drafted as this could help in recruiting.

Wow. What a difference a day makes -from nobody can block to first team offense was pretty good:). Coach is happy his O is back in the saddle Lets have an official welcome to this years B back tandem - MM and the Skov. Greatness in the making. Now do we have to start worrying about the D again?

Coach's official report:

"Six in one half dozen in the other."

"You just don't know when you're playing yourself."
It might just be me but my first thought was the posts saying that CPJ was just pessimistic about the o and not giving any credit to the d. He's right and I don't have any problem with anything the he has said.

It has officially begun. The GT offense with Justin Thomas armed with a 239 Lbs. B-Back to begin every play who can pound and ground into the middle of the defense behind a GCG who are blocking beasts is going to take this offense to another dimension this season.

The prior seasons of opposing defenses running an inside LB out to the edge to disrupt the QB and potential pitch is not going to have the impact it has had in the past. Defenses are going to have to play the inside B-Back with both DT's; an inside LB; and either another LB or Strong Safety at LB depth directly behind the DT's. Last season the Yellow Jackets just started to scratch the surface of what happens with a solid interior blocking trio and B-Backs around 220 Lbs. hitting the inside A and B gaps. Now they have an absolute beast who is hungry to carry the football. Skov didn't transfer to GT to spend all of his time as a blocker for an I-Back.

Those CPJ death marches in the past are going to pale in comparison to what is about to show up on Grant Field this year with the experience of this offensive line and a bruiser of a B-Back. Add to that the knowledge and off the charts ability of Justin Thomas in this offense along with the play calling expertise of the Head Coach, which creates an opportunity to see for the very first time on the Flats the FULL Playbook being utilized on offense.

In the OB you could see how confused a defense becomes when the B-Back gets positive yardage as the inside LB's are frozen and that creates opportunities for Justin Thomas on the edge that nobody wants to see except for Yellow Jackets fans. Toss in an unbalanced line with a cross block by the end tackle (TE and eligible receiver) and interior tackle and the running game just goes to another level of sophistication.

The countdown has started.

I just imagined Skov running the ball on called gives 5-6 times in a row, maybe switching up the gap a couple times for a total of about 35 yards. Watching the defense getting more and more frustrated as they face 2nd and 2 then 1st and ten then 2nd and 2 on down the field. I don't think there is anything more satisfying than to watch CPJ call basically the same play 5-6 times to repeated success like that. I love drives that have no 3rd downs.
