Decisions have consequences.

These are the things we knew would happen when you switch to something drastically different. If you didn't want to be bad for 5 years and potentially tank your program, you should have hired Jeff Monken and kept Nate Woody as defensive coordinator... he is now at Army with Jeff Monken.. Army currently is #4 in the nation in total defense, #3 in nation in turnovers gained, #9 in scoring defense, etc. Georgia Tech is #51. Does anyone really think Geoff Collins is a better football coach than Jeff Monken?

Head Coach: Jeff Monken
QB: Tobias Oliver
AB: Dontae Smith
AB: Tij Whatley
BB: Jordan Mason/Jerry Howard
WR: Jalen Camp
WR: Malachi Carter
WR: Adonicas Sanders

At worst, Georgia Tech is 2-1 right now with Monken depending on what happened against UCF (more on the schedule later). Could be 3-0 and ranked. Oliver would be in his 3rd year running the option, with who knows how many yards gained. The dude had 12 touchdowns as a backup QB, which led the team and was 4th in the ACC. He was born to run option. So GTech would have been settled at QB for 3 straight years of success.

That Syracuse team is terrible.... and that Florida State team totally sucks. It might be the worst Florida State team in history, and they barely won it.

Florida State is the easiest game on schedule.

Schedule coming up:
Louisville (loss)
Boston College (tossup)
#1 Clemson (loss)
#5 Notre Dame (loss)
#8 Miami (loss)
#23 Pittsburgh (loss)
Duke (win)
NC State (tossup)

2-3 wins max.

The recipe for success at Georgia Tech, and I have never waivered from this, isn't that difficult. You play in a BRUTAL conference. You can't do what everyone else is doing. Run the option, and schedule favorably.

Last year, if they had me as Athletic Director, here is what would have happened.

Jeff Monken takes the reigns from Paul Johnson. Nate Woody retained as defensive coordinator.

Game 1: UL Monroe.... win something like 55-3
Game 2: Middle Tennessee State.... win something like 55-3
Game 3: UAB.... win something like 63-10
Game 4: Georgia... get beat most likely

At this point you are 3-0... putting on a show, perfecting your timing, hitting your recruiting areas... leading the nation in rushing, rushing touchdowns, yards per rush, etc. Working on your passing game. Implementing the playbook, etc.

Then you go into your conference schedule.... Beat UNC, Pitt, Duke, Miami, NC State... Lose to Clemson, Georgia, VA Tech, and Virginia. Chances to beat VA Tech and Virginia. Only outclassed twice. Beat Virginia Tech 49-28 in 2018, 28-22 in 2017, 30-20 in 2016... Then lost to them 45-0 in Geoff Collins' first year.

Next season:

Game 1: Rice... win 60-0
Game 2: Charlotte... win 47-7
Game 3: Florida International... win 50-6

Rinse/wash/repeat

The Recipe
Play all non-conference games at home (except Georgia)
Schedule teams you will destroy. Each season you have 3 automatic wins to start the year
Play an insanely tough conference
In great years like 2014, you have a chance to do something special
In other years, you win 8 or 9 games and have a fun season
In really bad years, you win 5-7 games.

2011 is probably the best example of this strategy.... Played Western Carolina, Middle Tennessee, and Kansas to open the year.

Won 63-21, 49-21, and 66-24.

662 yards of offense against Western Carolina
596 yards of offense against Middle Tennessee State
768 yards of offense against Kansas

Finished 8-5 in an ok season. Got to #13 in country... Lost bowl game in overtime.

Fine season. Try to win those close games the next year.

How do I apply to be Athletic Director?

This may be one of the worst posts I’ve ever read on this site. I now have to spray decontaminating bleach on my computer to get rid of all the fecal matter.

You forget the fact that ACC teams had the offense figured out and the blocking rules changed. Why else do you think Johnson retired. His system was no longer potent. Now, if Johnson had started to incorporate a real passing game and recruited Tracy Ham types who could do it all then maybe you have a point regarding Monken. But, Oliver and Lucas Johnson could barely pass on a middle school level.

You play in a BRUTAL conference.
First of all, not even concerning the rest of your incoherent combination of vomit, did you just call the ACC: “BRUTAL”?? Lmao. In what world buddy? Pitt played for the conference championship in 2018, and finished with a 7-7 record. Clemson was the only team to win 10 games from the ACC last year. The ACC is at best the 4th best P5 conference from top to bottom.

Well it is an opinion and I believe that is what a forum is for. One can agree or not. What I will simply add is that if we continue down the path that CDP is taking us we will not be successful. His offense is too vanilla. We need an innovator as OC like CRF was. But time will tell.

Don’t waste your time explaining facts. It’s still a lot of people who want the TO and somehow have convinced themselves that’s the only way to succeed never mind blocking rules changes and yearly opponents figuring out how to stop the offense.

I think you send a resume along with a cover letter to the HR department. Make sure to detail your accomplishments and avoid vague language like "excellent team player". Watch the typos, those are a real deal breaker. I don't know how old you are but you may ask for a free internship position to get the proverbial foot in the proverbial door. Good luck young man. Can't get anywhere without big dreams! :)

The ACC is at best the 4th best P5 conference from top to bottom.

You’re welcome to this opinion, but based on ranked teams, number of teams who go to bowl games, and OOC records against P5 opponents, we routinely rank in the top 3 and occasionally #1. It’s always up for debate depending on what numbers you look at, but anybody who claims the ACC is bad is just making crap up. For example, right now we have the 2nd most ranked teams of any conference.

Johnson's offense was still effective. It was just no longer effective enough to counter the problems we had on defense. It reached the point where we basically had to keep teams from scoring over 28 to win, and that is not really what you want when you build your entire program for a decade around one side of the ball. It's also not a winning formula when you haven't been able to field a good defense in pretty much the entire tenure.

Monken is a good coach and may or may not have had success here. But it would have been a bad career decision for him to do so. People ignored, and probably have now forgotten, that we lost a ton of production going into last year. We were something like 11th lowest in returning production, and that was coming off a 4 year stretch that saw two post season misses and a mediocre 7-6 team. He'd be walking into a polarized fanbase, seen as a continuation of the previous staff that had struggled toward the end, and would be inheriting a team losing a ton of production. Monken is better off not walking into that situation.

It’s always up for debate depending on what numbers you look at, but anybody who claims the ACC is bad is just making crap up. For example, right now we have the 2nd most ranked teams of any conference.
Since 1998 (first year of the BCS), the ACC is 226-267 vs the other power conferences, including the Big East.

ConferenceRecordWin %
ACC226-2670.458
Big 10205-2130.490
Big 12179-1830.494
Big East119-1440.452
PAC 12176-1490.541
SEC250-1990.557
Now, obviously the college football landscape has change a lot since 1998. Most notably with the disbanding of the Big East into the ACC, B1G, and the rest into the AAC. So let’s get into some more recent numbers

Conf. 20192018201720162015
ACC6-147-1310-1417-99-13
Big 127-78-98-85-87-7
B1G7-1012-914-69-1112-13
PAC 128-56-77-98-86-8
SEC16-814-910-1211-1414-7
So, the ACC has been the worst P5 conference 4 out of the last 5 years, and the only year it wasn’t the worst, it ended up being the best.
5 year running records:
  • ACC: 49-63
  • Big 12: 35-39
  • B1G: 54-49
  • PAC 12: 35-38
  • SEC: 65-50
Every conference outside the ACC has had at least 2 seasons of .500+ OOC seasons. The ACC only has 1.

So thanks for bringing that up so I could research my talking point a little better. And just for the record, the AAC went 6-13 vs P5 + ND last year. So not only is the ACC confirmed to be the worst P5 conference overall, you could make the argument that the AAC is as close to the ACC’s level as the ACC is to the rest of college football.

I noticed you did not provide context in terms of who those teams are that are playing. Like I said, you can twist numbers to make whatever argument you want. The ACC has the second most ranked teams right now out of all five conferences.

We have teams like GT (Georgia), Pitt (Penn State), Miami/FSU (Florida), and others who play Top 10 teams as their P5 OOC game each year.

If you go look up teams like Michigan and Ohio State for example, you’ll notice they didn’t play an OOC P5 team last year until the bowl game (they both lost). Meanwhile, we played Georgia and Duke played Alabama. Seems normal.

So you can think we’re the worst, but the sports experts that do the rankings think we’re the 2nd best.

Michigan played Notre Dame last year. Ohio State didn’t play a OOC P5 game in 2019, but they played Cincinnati who is a top tier AAC team, on the level or probably better than a mid to low tier P5 team. OSU did play TCU and Oregon State in 2018, and Michigan played Notre Dame again in 2018. The Big 10 plays a 9 game conference schedule, meaning they have 1 fewer OOC game they can schedule than both the ACC and SEC. yet they’ve only play 9 fewer P5 games than the ACC has in the last 5 years.

Pitt does not play Penn State every year

Clemson is to South Carolina what Georgia is to Tech

For most of the modern day Florida State and Miami have been on par with Florida. They also aren’t hampered by their own school’s rules, regulations, and lack of monetary support like Tech is. FSU and Miami both have the resources and track record necessary to compete with Florida yearly, and FSU won 5 in a row from 13-17. FSU and Miami’s inability to compete with Florida recently are their own doings, and not relevant to the ACC vs SEC argument. If anything it’s just another point about the ACC being weaker when 2 of its most storied programs are dumpster fires.

Another one of the ACC’s more premier teams in Louisville plays a very middle of the road SEC team in Kentucky every year. That series is 3-3 since L’ville joined the ACC.

The ACC has faired just as poorly vs. the other P5 conferences as it has the SEC. The ACC went 1-5 vs. the B1G and 0-2 vs. the PAC 12 in 2018 after going 4-6 vs. the SEC.

Plus, this year’s rankings are irrelevant to the whole picture of conference power. The ACC and Big 12 were the only 2 P5 conferences playing games for 2 week. Most ACC teams have already played 2 or 3 games, while the SEC, B1G, and PAC 12 have played none. With the Big 12 losing a lot of OOC games, and OU losing to KSU, it’s no surprise the ACC has a lot of ranked teams.

In preseason rankings the ACC had the 4th most teams ranked (3 counting ND). The PAC 12 had 2, AAC had 2, Big 12 had 4, B1G had 6, SEC had 7.
Since the season started, only 1 team that has played 1 or more games has fell completely out of the rankings. That’s Iowa State. 4 teams have fallen out of the rankings without playing a single game. Replacing them have been:
  • Miami - ACC: 3-0
  • Pitt - ACC: 3-0
  • Mississippi State - SEC: 1-0
  • BYU - Independent: 2-0
  • Memphis - AAC: 1-0
Are Minnesota, USC, Iowa, and Utah now worse than they were 4 weeks ago? Or are other teams simply passing them in the rankings because they’ve played games and have winning records while the B1G hasn’t?

Wow that’s a lot of one spent on excuses and spinning.

ACC #5 Bleacher Report

ACC #3 (Just out of the 3 that have played this year) ESPN

ACC #5 247Sports

ACC #6(SIX) CBS Sports (yes, that’s right. 6)

ACC #6(SIX) RealTimeRPI (yes, another number 6)

ACC #3 Athlon Sports

By every metric, the ACC has been abysmal. I’m not sure who these experts you keep citing putting the ACC at #2 are, but I can’t find any of them. Without Clemson’s championships and CFP appearances, the ACC would not even be considered a power conference anymore.

In the same post links to people having the ACC third. LOL

(y)
1 of those links had the ACC ranked 3rd, as in last, of the 3 P5 conferences playing . Only 1 out of 6 media publications I posted doesn’t have the ACC rated last out of the P5 conferences. Even though I posted some clear perspectives above, here’s some clear words that will do so: 2 media publications picked the ACC as the sixth best conference. So yeah. That’s pretty abysmal

I don’t know who these people are either, but they give the ACC the 2nd most ranked teams.

I can go back and pick previous years we were #1, #2, #3, #4, and so on. Who cares.

@year_of_the_swarm post the Oline with the skill positions you posted

Hard to tell because of new recruits... You would have had Connor Hansen and Parker Braun last year though. Parker Braun being awesome.

Head Coach: Jeff Monken
QB: Tobias Oliver
AB: Dontae Smith
AB: Tij Whatley
BB: Jordan Mason/Jerry Howard
WR: Jalen Camp
WR: Malachi Carter
OL: Zach Quinney
OL: Kenny Cooper
OL: Mikey Minihan
OL: Connor Hansen
OL: Charlie Clark

"First of all, not even concerning the rest of your incoherent combination of vomit, did you just call the ACC: “BRUTAL”?? Lmao. In what world buddy? Pitt played for the conference championship in 2018, and finished with a 7-7 record. Clemson was the only team to win 10 games from the ACC last year. The ACC is at best the 4th best P5 conference from top to bottom."

Ok, let me clarify here..... Georgia Tech plays a brutal schedule. Clemson has been nearly unbeatable for awhile... Georgia is a top 5 team every year. Duke was pretty good with Daniel Jones for awhile... Miami always has talent.. Etc. ACC has been a good league, but when talking Georgia Tech schedule you have to include the game against Georgia in that convo as well.

His offense is too vanilla. We need an innovator as OC like CRF was. But time will tell.

Offense simply was not the problem. Even in the down years, it was the defense that was a huge problem. They scored plenty of points. Let me know when Geoff Collins puts 60+ on anybody. Even that last year, 2018.. 49 on Virginia Tech, 66 on Louisville, 63 on Bowling Green, 40 on UNC, etc. And the damn defense couldn't get anyone off the field.

Hey thanks man! Sending resume over now.

Don’t waste your time explaining facts. It’s still a lot of people who want the TO and somehow have convinced themselves that’s the only way to succeed never mind blocking rules changes and yearly opponents figuring out how to stop the offense.

Lets see what happens this year and next year... I have a feeling people will get tired of being awful.
