Preseason Accolades

That is a very nice accolade for Dedrick Mills heading into the 2017 season. But here's what's even better about it:

Only Paul Johnson was recruiting him as a Running Back (B-Back)! Every other school wanted him to play LB!

Kind of similar to Justin Thomas who was recruited by Bama and Saban as a DB. But he WANTED to play QB!

CPJ knows what he's doing on the recruiting trail!

Who else should be on the pre season all ACC list?

Who do you think will be there by years end?

One defensive player in the entire defensive 4 deep and that one is at 3rd string. And some like to say our defensive woes are not talent, only scheme. Lol. Most notably is not one Jacket in the top 20 DL's in the conference. (4 deep of 5 DL positions) It's awful tough to field a solid defense w/o a couple studs on your DL. We've typically had one or two, but zero??? Zero backers??? One DB???

Remember, defense is different than offense, we don't have a unique defense that can use specific skill sets to magically craft a top unit. And that's not necessarily a coaching issue. Defense is a different animal. There's only so much smoke and mirrors your can do to hide talent and measureable deficiencies.

Recruiting
Recruiting has gotten better imo but we all know for us to be competitive year in and year out we have more work to do. We've documented many times the disadvantages we face and hopefully Todd Stansbury will be able to help level the playing field. As it is we continue to recruit with one hand tied behind our backs. We've been fairly successful on the field because of the consistency of staff and imo that's the major reason recruiting has improved.

Not to take sides in everyone's second (third?) favorite offseason debate, but decent to good players in a bad scheme can look like bad players....

For defense:

Simmons will be All-ACC in some form at the end of the year. Mark it down. Looks like he's finally putting it all together.

I think AJ Gray is going to have a big year. Went through a sophomore slump, but he has all the tools.

Brant Mitchell could have a big year if we go to a 4 linebacker, or some 3-5 set. He's outstanding if he doesn't need to cover a lot of space.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Adams pop up on the list at the end of the year. Really hard to move as a true freshmen. Look for him to occupy some space and be a rock on short yardage situations.

I'll also add...if Griffin keeps it up, he's also a strong candidate to be All ACC.

Now we lean on Athlon for credibility lol
