This has nothing to do with keeping Leggett from being complacent...Leggett has a long ways to go from being our starter come Alcorn State.

@Eric I know you probably won't be very specific with your answer here, but is there concern over this? Or is your comment just due to the natural competition for positions that should be taking place?

Leggett has to get tougher from what I was told...the job is really wide open. Mikell and probably Marcus will get a good look in Fall camp too.

I thought Leggett was at the ready point last year when CPJ considered burning the redshirt.

Leggett wasn't ready, only reason it was almost burned was due to injuries.

Leggett has talent but he has to put it all together...and it takes a special mindset/person to play B Back.

I think people counting Messick out but that's a big dude that's athletic.
The freshman coming in the summer gonna make things really fun.

Yeah, I've always been a little perplexed about the lack of chatter regarding Messick. If he can get his blocking responsibilities and technique down, I think he has chance to be pretty good. He definitely has the physical tools to be the next GT trademark type receiver.

Goes to show how we never know about these kids until they get here and start fitting in. Watching his HS tape, I thought he was a perfect fit at BB, and was more excited than many by his commitment. I am confident CJ will become a contributor at GT, but the simple fact is that we don't know where that is. Maybe he'll be a great BB for us, or maybe an AB, or maybe he'll be another Synjyn story of taking some time to find that perfect role. Who knows. But that's what the offseason is for! All in all, I'm pumped about the influx of talent at BB.

It is very rare that anyone is instantaneously awesome. Let's give him some time.

If there is one thing that we know for certain about CPJ, it is that having raw talent isn't enough. You won't be playing much for him if you don't have your mind and your assignments right.

I've been told the biggest thing holding Messick's back right now is his comfort level with the plays/offense. He's still young and I bet he gets enough reps this spring/summer to help push him over the edge.

This reminds me most of things CPJ said about Perkins when Perk was a frosh / soph. Perk always had talent.....but CPJ has also always had very high standards.

The best thing we can do is not inflate a freshmans head-- I watched N Chubb from that correctional college play all thru highschool- he only came on with no he rah after he was all that was left. Had no expectations, No pressure, (of course that was until he got Jacket Stung! Let them get used to the speed of D1 ball- they have been playing T ball- now they are playing Travel Ball!
Are you crazy? Chubb was the "next Herschel" before the last one was even done playing. The pre-season hype for him was huge, they just thought they wouldn't need him yet.

If Marcus can figure out where to go... I would lay odds on him. Knowing where to go is just as important as being good at getting there.

Not at all what I wanted to hear about C J. I think after QB the B back is the next most important position in our offense. Maybe I am too influenced by the past season. I had taken the info until now to mean that Leggett was pretty much ready to go and just needed a little polishing. I figured everyone else was playing to see who would back him up. I don't like it at all that we are still auditioning for the part.

I think all this about Leggett is coach-speak. Coach wants steady and increasing effort from all players, if he can get it. I expect that what we are seeing here is the usual, "You may think you have the job tied down, but I don't see it that way and you had better remember that," stuff that every coach uses in spring. He wants Leggett to step up and claim the job for himself. But … sometimes the magic works, sometimes it doesn't.

Personally, I think CJ will be our starter come next season. Other then that … well, that's what spring practice is for, after all.
