What gets CPJ fired or encouraged to resign?

Thanks. How great is our business management undergrad program that we're hyping as far as comparative to other D1 football schools? Again, not trying to argue, I just want some ammo for Bill King cfb analyst who swears we are underperforming and using academics as an excuse. I've heard the metrics have changed, and our current staff can't even qualify the players that the last 3 regimes could for a while now. But Bill King says we were singing that same song under those regimes as well.

Bama and UGA have good law degrees don't they?

26 and 30 in US News & World Report rankings. In state politics, both set you up better than other schools in their home states.
I’m not sure about their pre-law rankings, which are what athletes would care about (how likely you are to get into law school)
There used to be some pre med or pre law kids playing football. I’m not sure if it’s as common now. Should be more than architecture though. ;)

The difference is that our players actually take Business/IM with it's prereqs, while players majoring in football at lots of other schools take easier courses (recall UNC!).... check out the players' majors.

not denying that its internationally known, but you're naive if you think its brand presense is weak anywhere outside of the south. Kim Kardashian is known internationally, doesn't mean people like her.

Never had any quality issues in california or in berlin and Hamburg.

We offer a BSBA vs their BBA. We have a higher math requirement and more science. The biggest change for Coach Johnson that previous Tech coaches did not have to face is the NCAA APR rules. Also, where we have a lot of players in business the factories put players in programs we can't offer. Even strong academic schools such as Stanford, Duke, et al have programs for athletes that Tech doesn't.

I am curious about one thing...assume most of our FB players are not in engineering but in IM or business or whatever they call it now.

I recall that about 60% of our kids are IM. Looking at Clemson recently, 50% of theirs were "Undeclared". Many of the senior starters were "Pre-Business" which is a freshman program. Suffice it to say, they aren't at Clemson for the academics.

Thanks for the link. i think it tells us what we already know....that a business degree from Georgia Tech University ;) is superior to a thousand other majors/degrees at Big State U. But it doesn't get into why/what GT can offer to a kid interested in business that a Texas or Michigan or UNC can't. My premise is that when we think about GT as a clear cut better choice, we are thinking from the perspective of an engineering education and thus may have biases that aren't true for athletes who are thinking of business as a major/career choice. I am curious as to how we differentiate ourselves in that sector, which is the pool where most of the fish swim.

Tech is among the highest in percentage of millionaires among the alumni. The basic pitch is "Come to Tech and you will be a millionaire one day. You may play in the NFL and do it that way. Or, like 99% of kids who don't, you have a Tech degree ... and you'll get it that way. But either way, if you graduate from Tech ... you have won the lottery." Or something like that.

I have multiple degrees from Tech (ME), Emory (MBA) and Ga State (Masters). Tech was by far the most difficult school in terms of rigor and that's speaking from an engineering point of view. Emory is the best business school in the area and among a Top 20 in the country. I don't think Tech's business school is as good as Emory's. As to to GSU ... I slept through it and got a 4.0. No challenge whatsoever.

While that IS a good sales pitch, I think the data is skewed a bit by the nature of the majors...in other words, everyone coming out of Tech pretty much has a marketable degree and we are not diluted by some of the majors that the big state schools offer. But, if one compared business grads only at GT vs. their peers at Uva, Duke, Michigan, Texas....how would the comparison be then? This seems like a more "apples to apples" comparison imo. (While it may not work in our favor, I think we tend to lean on the "1 in 6" statistic without giving it much thought).

Sure but we recruit from Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and the Carolinas heavily where the GT name does have some weight behind it. I think bikeseat's point was that we are gassing it up to be a lot better than it really is.

I'm not a business guy but from what I know from friends is that there are a few schools (like Wharton) that can get a job ecause of the name alone. But 95% of B schools are about internships which Atlanta/Georgia Tech can get you at some major companies.

Recruiting for jobs that do not recruit on campus is hard due to the lack of name recognition. Consulting is not too bad due to the ISYE reputation but anything in Finance is a crapshoot.

I know some guys that played back in the day at NW and the opportunities those guys are exposed to are far greater than what I saw guys doing re: internships and alumni connections. NW is a hell of a program that we really should worry more about. They are the closest to Stanford 2.0. Recruit well nationally, well liked player coach, strong academics. Obviously they have some soft majors to hide some kids but their alumni really go to bat for players from what i hear

FWIW GT's business school reputation does not extend much beyond the Southeast. I am in banking and there is almost 0 name recognition in the NE & Midwest.

Unfortunately the 'academic name' of Cal, Michigan, UVA, NW & Duke all are far ahead of us and the only remedy for that is time and continued excellence
I've been in the New York / Boston corridor for over 20 years (finance / real estate) and I can tell you this is not true. We're in the same breath as all the schools you list but Duke which has an over-inflated reputation up here (Dukies are second only to Harvard grads in telling you where they went to school within 2 minutes of a conversation). I get you're in banking and I deal with bankers every day so you may be right in that department but not in finance or real estate as a whole.

Edited to add - your second post about alumni connections etc. is spot on. At least in my experience.

I was recruited to work on Wall Street about 20 years ago. There was a set group of schools they recruited from ... mainly Harvard, Wharton, Chicago, some Princeton, some Yale. Wharton and Chicago were the top picks because of the quant work. Tech wasn't even considered. I was one of the few Emory grads considered and had to go through an 8 hour interview. And it's NOT because the Tech degree is not as good. It's the MBA that counts. And Tech does not have a stellar MBA program and a stellar MBA network. Emory's program is better if only because they've been at it a lot longer and the b-school research is much better.

Lord knows the USNews rankings are not perfect, but they have Emory’s MBA program ranked #20, Tech #28, and UGA #40.

The longer Tech’s program has been around, the larger the alumni network it will have.

Yep it's all about networking after graduation. The rankings seem to always give higher ranking to private schools. I think that part is bogus.

It has significantly moved up the ranks. One of my professors at Emory got his Ph.D from MIT (good Lord) ... and said it was fantastic. Perhaps GT has a similar plan for greatness. Why not?

What is Klock doing and what does he think about NW verses Gt about football and academics? Heard he is really enjoying being on team.

I’m gonna retract my statement of Fire CPJ and let the season play out. We all know we have to recruit better and be more efficient in the passing game. We’ll have a better idea this weekend of where we stand with our offense as far as how well we run it and I’m sure we’re going to have to throw the ball around 15 times too.
