@BilldGopher thoughts on Sanford coming to GT?
Hello Augusta. Had not seen that Sanford was up for consideration at Tech. Did a quick google and came up with this SB Nation piece on the OCs under consideration...

Moving over to Mike Sanford, his lone year at WKU as the QB coach was Willie Taggart’s first year, which did not go very well at all! They ran a more run-based offense, and the QB play was generally bad. Moving to Stanford, Sanford got to work with an already well-established Stepfan Taylor in his first season when he was just the RB coach. I would argue Taylor got overused a little bit in Sanford’s second season, and it looks like he kinda took a step back. The next season, he took over QB/WR coaching for Kevin Hogan’s first full season. He did fine, but because Tyler Gaffney broke out, he didn’t get much of a chance to shine. Ty Montgomery was the leading receiver that year, though IIRC he played a little bit of everywhere. Only one other receiver had more than 200 yards. In 2014 at Boise State, it was Bryan Harsin’s first season, and they were taking an offense under Chris Peterson that was already pretty good, and it got even better in 2014. QB Grant Hedrick did a good-ish job. He completed 70 percent of his passes for 3700 yards, but only threw for 23 TDs and 14 (!!!) INTs. Jay Ajayi also blew up at RB. In 2015, Sanford moved to Notre Dame to take over an offense that is already pretty solid. He oversaw Deshone Kizer’s breakout, but Year 2 under Sanford was a pretty dramatic drop in success. He took over a pretty good Western Kentucky team after that, and they regressed big time. In 2016, they won 10 games. Then they didn’t win 10 games between Sanford’s two seasons. Things got worse in Year 2 when his QB left. In 2019 at Utah State, he got Jordan Love’s last season there, and he regressed tremendously. He nearly tripled the number of interceptions he threw under Sanford’s tutelage. In 2020, he went to Minnesota, which once again had a pretty good offense already in place. Noticing a pattern? QB Tanner Morgan went from averaging 10 yards per attempt and completing 66 percent of his passes in 19 to averaging 7.5 yards/attempt and completing 58 percent of his passes. Morgan bounced back a smidge, but still isn’t completing more than 60 percent of his passes.

I've highlighted the Minnesota tenure that was only two season, especially the "noticing a pattern" quote in this piece.

When Sanford was hired by PJ Fleck to replace Kirk Cirroaccoca who left to Penn State (for what turned out to be a disastrous 2020 covid year season for PSU), he already had a reputation on our boards as an offense and QB killer. Throwing out 2020 for us as well, Exhibit A on the "QB killer" indictment is Tanner Morgan's best year over his 4 years to date was 2019, not 2021. The offense has been stagnant and predictable most of this year to boot, and folks were calling for Sanford's head out loud after the loss to Illinois (and recall we lost to Bowling Green too - yuck...and took a record away from GT at the time with that loss for this season). Now arguably the offense took a HUGE hit when our premier back Mo Ibrihim went down in the first game against tOSU, then we lost our second guy to injury and our third guy to the portal, so we were playing a true and redshirt freshman by mid-season that had to learn how to pass block. Still, even a hobbled offense needs to figure it out and Sanford at OC was inconsistent at best, and Morgan just was discombobulated several games.

So, to answer your question Augusta, Gopher fans would NOT recommend hiring Sanford, period...and in fact consider that hire a major error in judgment by Coach Fleck. Fortunately, he only lasted 2 seasons, we did beat Wisconsin to get The Axe back (sorry Sheboygan...NOT), and will be going to a decent bowl. Ironically, our rumor mill has Coach Fleck courting Cirroacca again (who has been in the ACC as a consultant with Virginia Tech) to come back. Practically all Gophers support that and hope it transpires.

I know this was a tough one for your guys this season. If it's any consolation Tech had the same record as Nebraska, where Frost fired his entire offensive coaching unit and took a $1 million pay cut. We of course are hoping HE HIRES Sanford, so please do not do that. If GC is considering Sanford, hopefully he gets input from Coach Fleck as to the reason for his dismissal from us.

One last thought. Coach Fleck is heartily embracing the portal and I think coaches that don't actively make it part of their planning...ad hoc and unpredictable for sure...are making a mistake if your program is trying to improve on the personnel front. The historical analog was going the JC route, but the portal is different. This is where GT as an institution has a very unique edge that should be marketed to players who bring something to the field as well as smarts or other life goals. This is be something you guys should be watching for in the offseason too.

Again, pray that Sanford is not hired. Not good. Billd.

Thanks for the insight. Looks like we avoided that potential pitfall.

Badgers are in Vegas for their bowl while we get Phoenix...interestingly playing Virginia Tech.

Glad you guys dodged the Sanford bullet. Hoping the new guy works out.

Happy Holidays to all Tech fans from the Billds.
Hey Awbuzz...I grew up in Mayretta BTW...see that's home for you.

Great place to live. Been away now for 30+ years but still come back for family and friends pretty much every summer.

Can anyone say Big Chicken?

Pulling this over from the Azareah recruit page...

Jules Montinar was the CB's coach for Florida last season and will not be retained. Looking over his profile and he looks very promising.

On this. Have any names been floated for the final two coaching spots?

He will end up @ Alabama or georgia as a quality control analysis .all coaches with experience those 2 coaches adds to their staffs . That’s why they programs are light years above everyone else. Smart used the Alabama guide for running his program. Collins thinks he knows how run a program. To many inexperienced Coaches. No ex head coaches. He didn’t learn much about Game day Coaching or putting a coaching. Staff together.
